first dance

I've read on here about choreographed dances turning into performances, so now I'm worried about our first dance... I'm a professional dancer and teacher and FI has had some training. We're planning on dancing to "All I Do is Dream of You" from Michael Buble. FI is likely to take the lead with some dips and turns- not choreographed but not just swaying back and fourth. Is this too AW? It's no different than we danced at a wedding last week, but I just don't want to come off like too much. I'm probably over thinking this :)

Re: first dance

  • No, it's fine to show off some of your "moves" without doing a choreographed dance or performing at your own wedding.   Plus, keeping it spontaneous will keep the moment special for you.  My husband and I arent' dancers AT ALL (we swayed), but it was honestly one of the most romantic moments of my entire life.  We were able to focus on each other and enjoy having the room melt away as we danced.

  • Thanks! I know I need a more upbeat song because if it's at all sappy, I will cry like a basket case, so I figured this would be more fun.
  • What you are describing is perfectly fine, and is something I prefer watching then just the typical swaying back and forth or turning in a circle.  I like when the first dance is relaxed and fun with random dips and twirls thrown in.  I absolutely cannot stand choreographed anything.  I have witnessed many a first dance that was choreographed and the bride and groom just looked stiff and semi-constipated because they were concentrating so hard on remembering their steps LOL!.

  • H and I took dance lessons before the wedding and decided what kind of dance we were going to do (a basic rumba box) and we learned how to do a few "tricks" but kept it spontaneous for the wedding day. We enjoyed our first dance and weren't worried about when to do what step, etc.

  • We did a foxtrot to a Frank Sinatra song.  Some turns and a dip - nothing choreographed.  We had fun and my relatives we pleasantly shocked that a klutz like me looked graceful while dancing!  :)

  • The foxtrot is my favorite dance of all time!

THat sounds fine, OP. H and I did kind of a slow east coast swing.

  • Google first dances and look at the youtube videos. Then you'll understand what people mean. I got sucked down the rabbit hole for like 3 hours one time. What a nightmare.

  • OP, your guests will expect more than the norm from you, so go all the way, stopping just short of AW.
  • Thanks ladies!! The song came up on my itunes today and I got worried after reading a post about a choreographed dance a while ago.

Emee, oh my god. Some are so awkward! I mean, I'm sure there will be a time during our first dance where I'll try to take the lead and I'll get caught up with FI but it'll be funny and very us. Some of them are so hard to watch! Like a train wreck, I can't look away!
  • Like achiduck, DH and I learnt some basic rumba moves and then improvised. It gave DH a lot more confidence and we were glad not to be just standing and swaying. We also have beautiful photos of us dancing properly!

Hmm..so I guess that's why they never have "stand and sway" night on dancing with the stars. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />  Me and FI are going to take a couple lessons too.  I would like us to do something like maybe a waltz.
