What size stone should I get for my e-ring?

Hey everyone!

My fiance and I recently became engaged. He proposed without a ring so that we could choose our engagement ring together.

I want a very classic tiffany-style solitaire.

For ethical and economical reasons, we have decided to go with an enhanced Moissanite gem instead of a diamond. Because we are choosing moissanite, price is not so much an issue (well, to an extent of course!)

I want a stone size that is big enough to wow people, yet small enough that it's believable and not too gaudy. My ring size is 5.

What size stone would you suggest?

Also, Does anyone have any photos of different carat sizes on a size 5 finger for reference?

I'm a ring size 5 and my e ring is 1 carat princess cut, it's not too big, not too small and I love it.

You and your FI should go to a jewelry store so you can try on rings. This way you can see how big you both want to go and what size band width you want and also discuss the budget.

I would suggest something close to 1 or 1.5 carat for a solitaire cut. Moissonite diamonds reflect a slightly greenish color when in direct light or sunlight, so anything larger than 1.5 would probably be really noticeable.

I have a size 3.5 ring finger and everyone is always shocked to find out my engagement ring center stone is only a half carat. I would say with a size 5 ring that a one carat diamond would have a similar reaction. However, I definitely recommend trying rings on to figure out what works best for you and FI.

I will agree with pp 1-1.5 carat is good. I have a size 4 finger and I have a one carat emerald cut and I don't think I would want something more than half a carat larger max.

I would also suggest playing around with different bands when you look for the e-ring. Different bands are going to make different cuts and sizes of rings pop more than others, so you might even be able to get aways with something a bit smaller and less expensive, but it end up looking larger and nicer offset with the right band.

You should just try some different stone sizes on. My e-ring is a 1/3 carat solitaire; I have small hands so anything larger would frankly look ridiculous.

This is not true. I have an enhanced moissanite ring and it does not have a greenish tint in any light. The picture above was taken in florescent light and my ring looks even better in sunlight. My ring does not even have a greenish tint on an overcast day. My center stone in a 1.5 but I wear a size 7 ring so I think a 1.0 ct will not look too big.

I wouldn't go anything over a 1.5 ct size, or it will look "fake" but it's best to try them on in the store! Have fun shopping!

Do you want it to appear to be a "real" moissonite? or a "real" diamond?

If you want it to appear to be a "real" diamond, which is what I assume you mean, then take a look at diamond prices and their corresponding sizes and choose according to what one might you could reasonably afford according to your lifestyle.

If you both recently graduated from college, a "believable" size might be a 1/2 carat.

If you are both attorneys, a "believable" size might be 2.5 carats.

I also don't want it to be so unbelievably huge that I'll constantly get "OMG that is HUGE" or asked "is that real!?" either haha. I just want it to be impressive without over the top. skyer1108 - Your center stone is set in a setting which helps enhance the shine(center stone surrounded by other stones) and was very well-made (your ring is gorgeous btw :-)). However, OP wanted a Tiffany-style solitaire setting which will reflect more light at various angles and will show the coloring if it is not a high quality stone or set too high in a prong setting.

OP - Most people really can't tell the difference, so I think the size you ultimately choose will just be what you are comfortable with. Also different ring styles and designs can make smaller diamonds look bigger or vice versa.

Definitely try on rings in a variety of shapes and sizes to get a sense of what you like and what feels good to wear. You might be surprised that the size/shape/style you think you will like isn't what you decide is right for you (and btw - that will apply to gowns when you are shopping for those, too)!

As far as your question about stone size and ring size is concerned, I have a .93 ct round diamond and wear a size 5 1/4 ring. I think if the stone were any bigger, it would be somewhat annoying to wear (it catches on things, etc....I may have to have it re-set).

Again, just go and try on lots of different styles and sizes and see what pops to you! Good luck, and have fun.

def try the sizes on, lots of those diamond sizes charts online aren't really accurate. my ring size is 4.5/4.75, with a centerstone of 1.22 brilliant cut on a very thing pave setting. nothing around the stone (such as halo, which are supposed to make the centerstone looks bigger), but people always notice that, cos it looks bigger on a smaller hand and on a thinner band. those bulking setting will only show that u have a "big ring" but doesn't necessarily show the "big stone." also, get a size that fits you. for example, my attorney friend gets his fiance a 2.2ct, but my friend whos FI just started working gets her a 0.5. cos if it goes way too much it'll just end up looking fake...

My ring finger is a size 5. I have a diamond ring with a little over a carat in the middle, and a little over half carat on either side. I think if it were a solitaire, a moissonite the size of a 1-1.5 ct diamond would be lovely.

I say it that way, because I don't know what moissonite weighs. My engagement ring is a 3.25 ct. sapphire, but sapphires weigh more than diamonds. So my sapphire is approximately the same size as a 2.5 ct. diamond, and here it is my my size 5 finger.

I can tell the difference between msst and diamond by eye when they're around a ct. or so, but I'm really interested in gemstones... most people won't know the difference.

As PP said, it will flash to green or greenish yellow in certain lights. I like the color green, so this wouldn't bother me, but it is something to consider.

I thought about Msst, but in the end, I did not want a man-made stone for my ring, but that's JMO, and it may not bother you in the slightest. If you're looking for a white stone that is not man-made, you might consider a white sapphire, many of which are mined right here in the US.

My ring is 0.44 carat. My ring size is only 3.75, and 1 carat looked really awkward on my finger. I told FI no larger than 0.75 carat.

As others have said, try things on. For the setting I chose, I liked the look of a 0.75 carat diamond, so I decided to get the equivalent size of 6mm. I actually ended up choosing Lannyte instead of Moissanite, but they're both lab-made stones.
