tell me what you think

We are getting married at an art museum, ceremony is at 7...so we decided to do heavy hor d'oeurves.  Here are my selections, please tell me if you think this enough, and also if you think people will feel like even though it isn't a plated dinner, that they were fed.

herb stuffed mushrooms
asst fresh fruits with toasted coconut fruit dip
marinated steak skewers
crab cakes with remaloude
fresh spinach dip with baguettes
antipasto bar
bruschetta bar
grape almond chicken salad crossaints
marinated pork on cranberry orange muffins

We will also be having cake.  We are also have a bar with beer, wine, and a signature drink....tell me what you think.

Re: tell me what you think

  • I think that will be enough for sure, but if it's a cost issue, it might be cheaper to do a buffet (if possible). I was going to do heavy hor d'oeurves due to cost, but I figured out I could do a buffet dinner around the same price.
BUT either way, all of that looks great!
  • That's a nice assortment. It sounds delicious! Did your caterer give you an idea of how much you will need?

The reason I ask is that 7 pm can be considered a "late dinner" time... even if your reception starts later, people may not have had time to eat beforehand. Therefore, you are replacing a meal with appetizers. Of the ones you have listed, the mushrooms, steak skewers, crab cakes require a lot of people handling them.......which bumps up the cost.

If you will have 6-10 apps per person you should be fine.
  • This is purely a personal complaint, but I'd substitute the chicken salad sandwich for something else like a mini cuban/mini muffaletta/ mini sub sandwich. I just hate chicken salad.

But feel free to disregard me. It sounds like you've got a great menu planned.
  • The caterer said that they average 13 bits per guest, but things like the fruit and antipasto bar will be constantly replenished.  We wanted it to feel like a fun, relaxed cocktail party..so ppl can mingle and enjoy the galleries, and not feel chained to their seats for hours. Does that sound too informal?  We are doing black tie optional...do you think quests will expect more with a more foraml attire??
  • It sounds good. I might do salad cups/pasta salad as well for another non-meat option.

I might lean towards putting "cocktail reception to follow" if you think it will be lighter than a typical dinner. If there will be a lot of food, then you are good to go.
