changing name

Does anyone have any information or steps on how to legally change your name after the wedding?  Thanks!

Well, the first step is changing your social security card. You can download forms to do so at ssa.gov or go to the local SS office. I live out of state, but thankfully we had one here near where we live. I brought a copy of our marriage abstracts and my old ss card. I then received the new card in the mail in a few weeks. Easy peasy. The worst part was waiting in the long lines at 3:30 in the afternoon.

After that you can do your drivers license. Then you can start doing all of your bank accounts, bills, student loans, life insurance, car insurance, etc.

Just take your wedding certificate and birth certificate/social security card and as you renew things like drivers license you can go to the various agencies to legally change your name.... bmv, social security office, bank, etc.

It's not hard. Just get your marriage abstract (I would buy 4-5 copies), and bring that with you everywhere you need to change your name. Like MissySue said, change your SS info first, then go to BMV (you can actually go the same day- SS office will give you proof of name change to hold you over until your new card comes). Then from there just bring your abstract and new photo ID to bank, etc. and usually you can just call your credit card companies and request a new card with your new name. Don't forget to do your passport and remember it takes a while to send back and forth. Oh, and change your voting registration information- I totally forgot about it and luckily my husband did both of ours (we moved and I got a name change all in 6 weeks, so we had a lot of info changes). I don't remember ever being asked for my birth certificate or social security card once I had my new photo ID and abstract, or at least if they were supposed to ask they didn't.

There are several social security offices you can go to get your new card in Columbus.  I went to the one in Worthington, and only had to wait about 20 minutes even though there were quite a few people there when I arrived, and it went very smoothly.  I had a friend who went to one on the east side somewhere, and she said it took forever and there were a ton of creepy people there, and she was glad her husband went with her.  I don't know if that is the norm, but thought I would just let ya know about my experience!

Oh, and it definitely saves time to fill out your form online - here is the link to the form from the ssa website:

(you only need to bring in the last page of this document, the actual form,  the first 4 pages are just instructions.)

Also if you really want to make things easy there is a website that you can go to, that will actually change everything for you. I think it's only around $30 and I've heard some good things about it on some other board here, so it seems pretty legitimate. Hope this helps!
