NER - help - random jargon question

Hey ladies, I'm hoping one of you can help me out.  I'm filling out an accident report - the roads sucked here this afternoon and a guy spun out of control and slammed into me.  I'm fine; my car not so much.  I came to rest in the little stripey area next to the left turn lane; similar to the one below.  Does anyone know what that type of striped off "don't drive here" area is called?

I feel really stupid writing "stripey area" but I have no idea what to call it...  TIA

Re: NER - help - random jargon question

  • Glad you are okay.     Watch yourself   My parents had a similar accident 26 days ago.  My dad thought we was okay, but just found tout today he got a stress fracture on his ankle.

I would call it a "painted divider" also

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • thanks Lia!  I think I can get behind "painted divider".  I thought about "painted median" but I feel like median makes it sound like the division between opposing directions of traffic.
  • Thanks Lynda.  My mom's been pretty insistant over the phone about going to the doctor.  He slammed right into the driver side of my car and the side airbags deployed.  I feel alright other than a bruised hip; figured I'd see how I feel after a little ice.

If nothing else make sure you tell the insurance company that your hip is bruised and anything else.   If something does come of it you are better protected.

My dad  mentioned it to his insurance.  Then he thought it might be gout (he had attack in the same area before), but meds didn't help.  Then he went on a business trip.  It was only today he could get to the doctor.  Because it was in the original report insurance will pick up the costs.

  • good to know.  I will be sure to mention it.
  • Kate - striped divider I guess.  Not sure.  Go get checked out by doctor.

    PS love your puppy!
  • I believe it is called a "gore." I only know this because my dad got pulled over once for illegally "crossing the gore," and he said, "officer the only gore I know is the vice president..." didn't end well. Point is, that's what the police officer called the striped area on an exit ramp diving sameway traffic.

score!  see I knew there had to be a technical word for it.  Like the time I spent half a day trying to figure out what those concrete posts that protect building corners and gas pumps are called.  (It's a bollard, btw).

    You rock :-)

<div>Bollard huh?  I love learning new words.  The way I studied for the SAT was by putting a vocab word in my lunch and then making myself use it 5x for the rest of the day.  Sounds nerdy, and I caught a lot of hell for it at first... but eventually all my friends started doing it too.  My favorite new word story (and it actually fits here) was the morning of the SAT my dad watched me make an illegal turn and completely chewed me out before the exam.  He used a word I didn't know, and I made him define it.  Guess what word showed up on the test?  I couldn't believe it.</div>

  • Glad you are ok! I was in a similar accident last year; I second all of the advice to go to the doctor, and also recommend taking a picture of your hip bruise. Even if you are totally ok, the other driver's insurance will likely offer you some sort of settlement. Accidents are hard, and you might as well get what you are entitled to in return. Good luck with everything!

Ha, well that's convenient!  I read a book; I think it was called the Ring of McAlister? that had some 1000 SAT words used within it.  Who knows if it actually helped :-P.  I find those words though, that you spend a long time looking for (like bollard or gore) stick with you forever, haha
  • Sounds like gore is the right way to go... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gore_%28road%29

And please go to the doc JIC. I was in an accident when I was 16, thought I was fine, but I still have terrible problems with my knee because of it.
My reaction to most everything on the internet today:

  • Yes go to the doctor ASAP. Almost all the time your adrenaline is rushing and you truly don't feel any pain at all but it will settle in by tomorrow. Ill liken this to the accident my FI just got in.. He was rear ended and it looked just like paint scratches on the car, similar to your minor bruise, but turns out the entire frame was bent underneath. Not saying you're totally broken but there can always be something going on below the skin you aren't aware of.
