Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

2 ceremonies?

My fiance is Jewish and I an Catholic. We are trying to compromise by having any interfaith ceremony, but my family isn't taking it too well. Is it possible to do 2 ceremonies? A Catholic ceremony on a Friday night then a Jewish one Saturday or 2 on Saturday? Please Help!

Re: 2 ceremonies?

  • My first inclination is to say of course it's possible, many inter-faith couples have two ceremonies.  The logistics of such are up to you.  You could do the Jewish ceremony with reception on a Saturday (or Friday) and have the Catholic ceremony witha full mass on Sunday.  That might work.
  • People do it all the time!  Only I'd reverse the days of the last poster - Catholic on Sat., Jewish on Sun. (since church services are on the opposite days).  Good luck!
  • Your families are not the ones getting married. People combine traditions all the time. Just have one ceremony. It'll be less headache for you.
  • How observant is your fiance and his family? They may have serious reservations about you having a Catholic ceremony. As for the possibility of a Jewish ceremony, it may be difficult to find a rabbi who will perform an intermarriage - a Reform or Reconstructionist rabbi might, but you should be prepared to experience some resistance, especially if you plan to have a separate Christian ceremony.
  • thanks for all the responses. the priest I grew up with is willing to do the ceremony in or outside of church with a rabbi. i grew up religious but in recent years have atteneded church less and less. it is important to me to receive the sacrament and catholic blessings. my fiance doe not know a rabbi so we have to find one. he did not express ever that he wanted to get married at temple nor did i think he cared where the ceremony was until his family got involved. i want to respect both families in what we do. my fiance has also mentioned that he does not want to have 2 ceremonies because then his family wouldn't attend the church ceremony when we actually were married. is it possible to do a chrcuh ceremony on a sunday?
