~SameSex Marriage~ Newly engaged females~ Getting started with planning~

So, I recently got engaged on 5/13/12.  We had been together off and on for the past couple of years.  I decided that I needed to take a break after the painful death of my mother.  I'm all alone in planning this without my mother and I'm really just stuck on where to start in planning my wedding.  I know that GA is not a lesbian friendly state to get married in and at one point I was thinking about having a DW.  I soon found out that only a few of my family members could attend the wedding.  I'm reaching out to see if there are any same sex couples online that could help us get started on things to do.  We have done the small things like choose the colors, pick the date, set a budget(that keeps changing), and finally we've chosen the bridal party.  I want to have something nice but it doesn't necessarily have to be a big wedding.  Since my mother will only be present in spirit; I wouldn't mind if it was only the 2 of us.  Her family doesn't really accept her(besides the small selected few) so my family is truly her family.  I'm just looking for a few good idea's.  Maybe a planner, we need to take engagement pictures.  I just really don't want to deal with anyone that doesn't respect us and our decision to marry, but are completely willing to take our money.  That doesn't fly with me.  HELP IF YOU CAN PLZ!!!!!

I don't have any help for you unfortunately. . . .however, maybe you can check out the "Gay Weddings" and/or "Destination Weddings" special topic boards for ideas and guidance.  Good luck and congratulations!
  • Congratulations, hope you get the wedding you've dreamed of

Congratulations on your engagement! If you're thinking of probably having it be just the two of you why not look into a destination wedding and combine it with your honeymoon. I'm not 100% on all the countries that allow gay marriages but I THINK some options are:

    • Canada
    • Belgium
    • The Netherlands
    • Spain
    • South Africa
    • Norway
    • Sweden
    • Portugal
    • Argentina

Hopefully you find what you're looking for and have a great wedding day!
  • Congrats on your engagement!  Seconding the rec to try the "Gay Weddings" board here; it's not a very busy board, but the people there are nice and very helpful.

As a general matter, it's a good idea to decide on a few key things first when you're wedding planning: your budget, your (rough) guest list, and where in general you want to have it.  Even the stuff you mentioned, like planners and engagement photos, whould probably wait until you have that.

I can't tell you much about finding same-sex wedding-friendly vendors in Atlanta. I'm marrying someone of the opposite sex, but I live in and am getting married in DC, where same-sex weddings are pretty normalized.  Most local wedding magazines feature at least some same-sex couples, most of my vendors have some same-sex weddings in their promotional photos, etc.  I'm pretty confident that all of my vendors here support same-sex marriage and aren't just out for people's money.  :)  But I bet you could find some of those in GA too, you'd just have to look a bit harder.

I don't have advice, but I wanted to say congratulations and that I got engaged on the same day as you guys. What a great day!
  • Many of the casinos/chapels in Vegas have "Commitment Ceremony" packages. Unfortunately, gay marriage isn't legal in NV, but civil unions are.
  • Thank all of you guys so much.  That really makes me feel welcome.  Im going to do some research and find out about the things that you all have suggested.  EC88, yes it was a great day especially how it was done..... Congrats to all of the engaged ppl, and thanks again for the warm wishes.Laughing
