Flight booking advice

FI and I are looking into hm options right now while my boss fiures out exactly how much time I am allowed to have off, so we have time to make a decision. I am trying to find the cheapest way to book a flight. I know there are trends where it is cheaper at certain times. I am skeptical of sites like expedia, hotwire, etc... after studying hosptitality management in college, I realized they usually don't actually save you money and can eliminate perks you would usually get if you book through the airline directly. So does anyone have any tips on how to get the best deal on a flight?

Huh. Never knew that all that money I saved on flights going back and forth overseas doesn't really count! And those bumps too, because of our mileage. Interesting to know.

Anyway, we usually use those "skeptical sites" like cheaptickets and do a main search on kayak to check the overall best deal. Cheaptickets is the only one we've found that doesn't charge a fee after you go through the process, so the amount you see is the amount you pay. Also, kayak will check not only "deal sites, but the airline websites.

We have traveled quite a bit and found that a package (flight/hotel) is almost always cheaper on those "skeptical sites" - our favorites are Expedia and Travelocity. We have had horrible experiences with Orbitz (and its affiliates, including Cheaptickets). If you are only booking flights, you can usually get the same price on the airlines websites, but you can still use Kayak to help you find the best price.

We recently booked our flights to Orlando through Orbitz and found that the prices on the Delta website were about $50 more then they were on the Orbitz website. We kept going back and forth and they never lowered on the Delta website so we booked it through Orbitz and saved $100 between the two of us. And that money will be buying us a nice dinner out one evening. :-)

Try to book on Monday nights or Tuesdays - fares are cheapest those days. Sometimes there's no difference if you look on Friday vs. on Tuesday, but sometimes there is, so it's worth it to hold out and avoid booking over the weekend when fares are typically highest.
