The best gift

FI and I are registering this weekend! So, two questions -

1) What is your favorite/most useful gift that you recommend registering for?

2) Since we have two households of dishes and pans, is it ok to register for something like a radio or surround sound components?

Register for what you want, but make sure you have a variety of price ranges for your guests to pick from.  We have a fairly good idea of friend's and family's budgets, so we tried to concentrate gifts in that price range, and then added things that were less and more expensive.

We got our casual china place settings at our engagement party, we love those, but we were using 1980s dishes that I had gotten from a relative when I was in college.  The most surprising thing that we use a lot is a glass top serving tray and spreader set.
  • 1. A good set of knives. We had decent ones that we thought were fine, but now that we have really good ones, I don't know how we did without them.

    2. I don't think it matters what you're registered for (as long as it's not baby items, I've seen that and definitely side-eyed it) as long as you have a decent selection of things in many different price ranges.

  • 1) nicer sheets and towels! We got 1000 thread count sheets.  best gift ever.

    2) I think that's perfectly fine.  I'd just make sure you have some more traditional  gifts on the registry for Auntie Sally.
  • We probably use the kitchen and bathroom stuff the most.  I wish we had registered for a nice set of knives.  I think it's fine to have the stereo stuff on there as long as you have a range of prices and a variety of other items.

I use my knives a ton. Also, sheets and towels are great!

Otherwise, I haven't used much, but there's lots I'm EXCITED about using, like our serving pieces and platters.

ETA: I would probably side-eye a friend if they registered for anything too outside the kitchen/home realm. Board games, DVDs, are fine...surround sound? Not so much. But that might just be me. I had a friend who registered for an iPad, and I was like, uh...no?

My brother and SIL registered for an entire living room set as well as a really expensive hair straightener and some other odd stuff. They also had about 5 different registgries plus asked for cash on their invites. But they're tacky like that.

<div>Yesh this is how I feel too.  We haven't gotten married yet so I can't tell you the best gift (though I'm anticipating that it will be either the iron or the food processor - both of which we need desperately).  But I can tell you that a good set of knives is really important for not only ease of use but safety - that's a splurge that is really worthwhile.   Our knives are the most expensive thing on our registry.  I also really recommend one or two pieces of le creuset cast iron pots in sizes that you will use for roasts, stews, etc.  They are AMAZING and will literally increase the quality of your cooking on the first try.</div><div>
</div><div>As for the electronics, that sort of bugs me because they might break or be abandoned as soon as you leave whatever house you're in or become outdated next year when the next bright and shiny thing comes out.  Personally I would use wedding money to purchase a new stereo system if you really want one - that will also give you the opportunity to shop around instead of being limited to the stores where you registered.  But I mean, having said that, it bugs me WAY less than a honeymoon registry because at least it's a physical gift.</div>

  • 1- We love the new sheets and towels. Those were awesome! It was a chance to go a little more posh than we usually would, and we use them all the time.

2- Put what you want on your registry. I enjoy getting gifts out of the ordinary for people. One friend had board games on hers, and knowing how she and her H like to host game nights, it seemed like the perfect gift. We had a bike rack on ours. My aunt bought it for us. I think cookbooks and art items make great registry items. Surround sound would be fine with me.

  • When I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond the woman told me to create my ultimate wish list.  I took this into consideration while also respecting budgets.  The lady also told me to register for 3 times as many guests you have invited.  So if you invited 100 guests, register for 300 items give or take.

  • Our ice cream maker has gotten the most use out of all the gifts we registered for.  dh loves that thing.
