    what do you mean, "got" common law married? had a common law marriage ceremony with a license? I was not aware that there is a license associated with common law marriage. so far what I'm hearing sounds like a civil ceremony in an office, but I know I could be wrong. explain please.

    Wow at pooh okay didnt think that was called for. But anways to op I didnt know you could do it that way because before my husband and I was married we called ourselves common law but in order to get out of our lease because my then common law husband was deploying we did everything through the millitary.

    When it comes to legal matters, it is usually best to ask a lawyer or a government office. Not a message board full of complete strangers. 

    But using good old Google, I found this, which would indicate that your "informal marriage" has all the legal recognition of traditional marriage, so no need to change: 

    Is Common Law Marriage Different From Traditional Marriage Under the Law?

    No.  When a common law marriage exists, the spouses obtain the same legal treatment given to officially married couples, including the requirement that they go through a legal divorce to end the marriage.  Texas officially recognizes the union and the couple receives the same legal treatment as formally married couples.  And if Texas law recognizes the common law marriage as valid, federal law will respect that union as a valid marriage, as well.
