Invites Matching the Wedding "Theme"

Do invitations really need to match the wedding theme/colours?

We were engaged in Japan on vacation and I'd love to add a little something Japan-ish to our wedding without having it "take over" (ie: no Japan themed wedding).  So, I was thinking that I might do a Cherry Blossom invitation since we were engaged during cherry blossom season.  I wouldn't think twice about it if I wanted to have a pink wedding but I don't think I do...

Any thoughts?

    Maybe use the design of a cherry blossom to reflect your engagement but print it on the invitations in a color that matches your wedding?

    I don't think invitations have to match the wedding at all. The only thing that I think should match is the formality and general tone.

    Other than that, I can't imagine getting to your wedding and wondering why you had cherry blossoms on the invitation but not at the wedding.

    Exactly.

    I agree with PP - the invitation does not have to match the theme. We are getting invitations with red soaring hearts but that is neither our color nor our theme, we just liked the invitations.

    Having the theme match cherry blossoms is a great idea.  Japan is also about bold colors and sleek lines so you could also think about that as you design your invitations.

    It's not required, but it's more cohesive for guests if the invites are related to the wedding itself.  Personally, I don't wear the colors on the invite when I attend a wedding, as I assume that's the bridesmaids dresses, etc. 

    You could do a cherry blossom shape but in your colors.  There are also lots of other elements to Japanese culture that you could tie in.  What about the kanji for love as a graphic element?  Just be creative, and google, and I'm sure you can come up with something.

    My sister's invitations were "Asian-inspired" but there was nothing Asian-inspired about the wedding and reception.
