Gay Marriage

On TK I realized there are some very powerful opinions out there, so let it out! What is your opinion on gay marriage and why?

100 percent for it! I'm straight but I totally support it and so glad my state allows it legally now. It's a big step for the future of America and I hope it will be legal and accepted in every state. Marriage is not btwn a woman and a man but between a lover and another lover.
It's a civil rights issue.  Any people of mature age and with the ability to consent should be able to enter into marriage. That goes for polygamy, too, as far as I'm concerned .   If everyone involved is a consenting adult, then let THEM decide their personal relationships. In this era of rampant divorce, and so many couples who decide they "don't need that piece of paper", WHY???? are people so against legal marriage for gays.  That IS a "defense of marriage"!! Future generations will look back on this issue the same way we do slavery....."I can't believe people actually thought that way."

So, I realize after our little exchange earlier that this will come off as me picking a fight with you, but I promise it's not:

What are your thoughts on incestual marriage in that case?  We had a discussion here about it awhile back (not sure if you saw it or not_, and I'm curious if your support of this extends to incestual marriage.

  • 100% for it. Everyone should have the right to marry who they want. It is not ok that some people are denied a basic right simply because they love someone of the same gender. As far as I'm concerned, homophobia is just another form of racism.

  • To the comment about incest marriage. That should be illegal became that harms others-the children that come out of it. studies show that children of incest have many physical and mental health problems. With studies proving this will happen, it should be kept happening.

Gay marriage should be 100% allowed.

Because people get married solely to have children?

I'm 100% in support of gay marriage, for the record.

  • Completely in support of the right for homosexual couples to marry. You know, we're all human beings after all. And we're supposed to enjoy equal rights and all that.

This may be a flame-worthy comment, but I feel like there is no truly logical reason why gay marriage shouldn't be legal that isn't homophobic, bigoted, or ignorant in some way. I have never once heard an intelligent argument against gay marriage.

I know it's become a party line but if you don't like gay marriage, don't have one. If you feel that gay marriage threatens heterosexual marriage, then your marriage isn't as strong as you think it is.
I'll bite.  Again, if they're consenting adults, that's their business. While somewhat gross, depending up on the degree of the relationship, it's strictly a moral issue and one of custom. Cousin marriages are legal in my state, and I'm the product of ancestors who married cousins, (You may laugh and joke.....I'm a suthun gal who can take it.) as did most of royalty and several U.S. presidents.  Nobody was hurt. The "it's genetically wrong" dates to theories in the 20th century, and has been proven incorrect.  <strong>The children of close kin MAY have a higher risk of certain diseases or abnormalities IF - and this is a big if - they carry the gene for a certain disease.</strong>  It doesn't automatically mean they'll have mental or physical problems. The Egyptian pharaohs married their brothers and sisters. Whatever works.
    Posted by RetreadBride
True. And it gets into the debate of should we ban people from marrying who both may very likely carry the gene for something like Tay-Sachs, whether or not they are planning to have children? There would be a huge outcry, because it's not fair or just.

There is the "gross" factor, of course, but like J said, plenty of marriages don't result in children. And if someone wants to have children with an immediate family member, who says they're going to try to get legally married first anyway?

Sorry if this further derails the thread, but I think most people on TK support gay marriage anyway? I think the only poster I ever saw who was "eh" about it was Chels.

  • Yup. For gay marriage and thanks to Stage for bringing it up last time we had the convo, now realize that incestual marriage is generally nothing to be scared of. The idea that marriage no longer leads to automatic procreation is really the best reason to not regulate marriage.

  • I'm all for gay marriage.  Love is love, and everyone should be allowed to enjoy it and declare it.  Why would we stop people from getting married (which is a joyous thing), no matter who they love?

  • I am completely 100% in support of Gay Marriage.

I live in the UK now, and there was a big debate in Scotland last week from the Catholic Church (go figure) about the legality of Gay Civil Unions.   Basically, the Church was very publicly protesting gay civil unions (which are legal here), despite the fact that churches aren't required to perform them, and the people getting married weren't Cathoilc.   WHAT?!?!?   I don't understand why people feel the need to protest something that in no way affects them.  How do two non-Catholics joining in a civil legal contract at local registry office IN ANY WAY have anything to do with the Catholic Church?    When asked this, Catholic leaders said it was "their duty" to protest something that they believe so strongly against.   I still don't get it.  I mean, preach your beliefs to your congregation, but don't issue public protests about the legality of civil unions of non-Catholics.

  • Marriage is one word for two different things that many people think of concurrently, but do not necessarily both have to take place at the same time.

    1. It is a legal contract certified by a state that involves shared property, being able to get one's insurance, being a legal next of kin, etc.

    2. It is a religious or social ceremony and contract that people may consider a sacrament or 'sacred' or restricted to a religious nature.

My stance is that the first one should have little to nothing to do with religion, yet somehow those two always get confused.  Ask many an old Catholic lady- if you get married in a Courthouse without a priest, is it a real marriage?  On the same hand, if you have a wedding ceremony by a priest without a marriage license, are you really married?

Somebody brought up the cousin marriage question-

While I agree that marriage is not solely for the purpose of creating children, there is often an implication of activities that may result in babies that happens within marraige.  While cousin marraiges have (as previously mentioned) only a slightly higher rate of genetic diseases, a history of consanguious (woo hoo SAT word!) unions resulting in children do lead to issues down the line.

Therefore; I think that setting a line with familial marraige is well within the public health reach of the government.

    : )

As for OP  I completely support <em><u>marriage equality</u></em>.  I've been married for two years and the marriages between gay couples hasn't affected my marriage one bit.  I lost a lot of respect for Gov. Christie here when he vetoed a marriage equality bill and said the people of NJ should vote on it.  While I don't doubt the people here would pass it, we do not vote on eachother's civil rights.
In Response to Re: Gay Marriage : I agree, except I hate the term homophobic. Anti-gay, anti-gay marriage, ect are fine. But homophobic  sounds like being specifically bigotted against gay people is some sort of justifiable fear or disorder- it's not. It's called "being an asshat" ETA: And I realize that many people were raised to be anti-gay. But many people were also raised to be racist and sexist. And once you're an adult that just isn't an excuse. <strong>In my book if you're a grown adult who is a bigot, you're a jackass.</strong> I have no patients for this crap anymore.

Very good point. Most people aren't actually homophobic the way arachnaphobia causes actual psychological problems for people who come in contact with spiders. They're just plain ignorant. I totally agree.

    Love the bolded.

  • Gee, I guess I'd never get married then, but since (as far as I know) I'm not infertile, I just don't WANT children, it would be my CHOICE, and it would all be ok.

    That's terrifying.

<div>Congrats!  I am assuming due to the timestamp that you are now happily married. :-)</div><div>
</div><div>OP, I am a supporter of marriage between consenting adults.  LGBT and otherwise.  In fact as I have been looking at vendors for my own wedding (heterosexual), I have been paying attention to those vendors who are supporters of the LGBT community.  </div><div>
</div><div>I haven't really given the close family marriage much thought, but as an anthropology major in college, I read about a lot of groups who still practice it with no taboo attached.  In some cases there is no choice due to small community size.  And I am pretty sure if most of us looked back far enough in our family tree's we'd find incest.  </div><div>
If we limit marriage based up on health reasons, where will that stop?? Should marriage be refused because a person has a disease, and "might" pass it on to a child? Would that make mandatory sterilization legal as a condition of granting a marriage license? One argument by the anti-gay crowd is that homosexuality is a mental disorder, and that the children will be damaged if they have two dads or two moms.<strong>  I think we agree that this is ridiculous, and none of their business.
