opinion on bar

I realize that a lot of ppl on the knot think having a cash bar is a horrible idea but we don't have the money for alcohol. Our reception is a little different-we are having it at a gaming place. We are giving everyone game play cards and having dinner. There will be no dj or anything just playing games and eating. In your opinion are people going to think we are cheap or bc it is not a normal reception that it will be okay? TIA for opinions!

I think that if you provide non alcoholic drinks (like pop and tea) then you will be fine.

Do what you can afford. It doesn't really matter what others think b/c if you don't have the money for it, it's not fair to you to have to pay for everybody to drink. There are lots of weddings where people don't have alcoholic beverages.

How are you doing the dinner? Are people ordering individually or is there a spread. How will the drinks be handled? Does the place have alcohol. My concern would be if people are ordering their meal they might order a drink that you would have to pay for.

WE are paying for our own wedding so I understand budget!
WE are provideing a drink for the toast (as in white or red wine) for each person...
and other than that it is a cash bar... (which is not expensive at our venue) 3.50$ a beer I think... etc

You do what you need to do, and if they don't like it to bad lol

We are having a buffet type of dinner. A few entrees, sides etc are offered. Yes our venue very much does alcohol. They have a bar. (we could not afford the additional $10,000 to close the place so when people are playing games there will be people not at the wedding around them-but then we have a private room for eating and cake. I am a little nervous about that but the extra 10k was not in the budget just to have others not playing games at the same time-hopefully it turns out all right)

I don't think people will think you are cheap. Because you are having the reception at a location that always has a bar that will not be closing down you obviously cannot ask them to stop serving alcohol. It sounds like a fun reception to me.

A few years ago I went to a wedding where the reception was at a restaurant with a cash bar. I drank more at that wedding than any wedding I had ever been to that was open bar.

I understand the ettiquette behind having open bar, however sometimes it is just not possible and your guests will understand that.

We are having a cash bar and everyone is fine with it...everyone knows open bars are expensive...you are throwing a wedding...a celebration of your union....you do what you can and everyone else will come and have a blast, open bar, cash bar, closed gaming, open gaming...I personally think it sounds REALLY FUN!!!! I wanna come!!! ha ha...we are doing what sounds fun to us and having a cash bar....I am just 99.9% sure that no one will think you are cheap or anything like that....its a wedding!!!! Its gonna be great!!!!

I think in this case, you should indicate via a sign or something that non-alcoholic drinks are provided. There is nothing wrong with a "dry" wedding where you don't provide alcohol.....but if people take it upon themselves to go out to the bar (outside of your "reception" area), there is nothing wrong with that, IMO. It's a fine line around a cash bar....which I don't like.

I think you will be fine as long as you have other drinks of course. Honestly, I think it is more rude of guests to expect to be able to get trashed at your reception than having to pay for drinks at a cash bar. But that's just me

Could the gaming place put a "bar" in your room that just serves soda, water, etc. That would still be hosted since that's the main area of your reception. I definitely see how this situation is unique. Would they be willing to run a group tab for you? I'd think the bars throughout might be tied to a central system? Maybe?
