Cake Contessa - STAY AWAY!

I posted about this company within a thread earlier, but I thought I should give it its own thread. She did my wedding cake, here is my review: I was so dissapointed in this vendor. Our consultation was great, and the cake tasted so amazing. She was really easy to work with and I was sure she was going to deliver a fabulous cake. Unfortunately, she set up a cake that was falling over before she even left. Instead of fixing it, as my mother asked her to, she just left, and we were left to scramble all night as it continued to tip and my uncle continued to try to prop it back up. My coordinator even called her and left a message for her to please return to fix it, which she did not. When we went to cut the cake (which was very stressful, since it was about to fall over), there were plates on the top of the layers (under the frosting), and so we were not able to cut through them. I ended up eating a forkful of frosting, because that was all I could get. After the kitchen cut it up and brought me a piece, I realized that it tasted nothing like what the tasting had. The cake was dry and tasted very old, and the frosting was not the same at all. I was embarrassed to be serving it to my guests. We had sheet cakes from Sam's Club that we served instead, because they were much better tasting. The design was also very wrong. She even "forgot" my cake topper, and then just left when she realized instead of doing something to fix it. In short, I received a cake that did not look like we had agreed to, did not taste like what she supplied at the cake tasting, and could not stand up by itself without a lot of attention and some close calls throughout the night. I emailed Lanette about all of this after the wedding, and she denied any reponsibility, and even suggested that my brother must have bumped the cake, because he was a teenager. She refused to do anything to fix it, or even apologize. I would stay far far far away. I have also learned that she is not licensed at all. Please take my advice and find another baker. She is capable of making a good cake, as she showed at her tasting, but you just don't know if she actually WILL.

I am soooooo sorry that this happened to you!!!  How embarrassing and frustrating.  Thank you for the warning, I hope it saves other brides the hassle!  Especially since she is not licensed!!!  DId she tell you she was licensed?  I would file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

There was a question on this board a few months ago about whether she was licensed or not. The general consensus was that she was not. But at that point I had already booked her, and I was SO excited, because the tasting had gone so well. I should have cancelled, but she already had my money and I really thought she would work out. That was my mistake. :( I really do hope this helps someone, because it really was embarrassing. I had told lots of my friends about how excited I was for my cake, and they were expecting something...better.

That sucks Mal.  How did the rest of your day go?

I was a little scared from your post. We are already booked with The Cake Contessa with our non-refundable deposit. So I checked and she is licensed with the Health Department. Who else does she need to be licensed with? I will check into it right away. Thanks so much for your post! I am so sorry that you had a bad experience with your cake on your wedding day : ( How the heck were able to get sheet cake to serve to your guests that last minute? Has anyone else used The Cake Contessa and had a good or bad experience? She has great reviews on other sites so...... I am confused..... and a little worried.

We bought sheet cakes from Sam's Club because we were having a come and go reception, and we wanted to be able to serve cake to those who weren't going to stay until the end of the night for the cake cutting. So, we ended up just serving that. I am glad that she is licensed. I don't know much about how that works, except that no one on the Knot could find her license ab out 6 months ago. If I had a friend that had already booked with her, I would tell her to cancel. But I know that she already has half your money, which makes it not that simple...

I am sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience with her. I used her for my 10-10-09 wedding and had absolutely no problems at all. The flavors were wonderful and exactly what was promised. She delivered on time and I had no problems with any of the cake. I was really happy with her as a vendor and she was very easy to work with. I would have no problems recommending her based on my experience with her.

Being licensed with the Health Department is not the same thing as being a licensed baker.  I am not sure what all goes into becoming a licensed baker, but it is different than being licensed with the health department.  Anyone who serves food or beverage professionally MUST be licensed with the health department, so all bakers are, but there are plenty who do not have a proper baker's license.

Lanette (The Cake Contessa)- You have been asked to stop reporting here before. I have picture proof and email proof of your ineptitude. This is not the forum for this kind of drama.

Cake Contessa did my wedding cake this year, and my sister's cake last year. They were both exactly what we wanted. We own a flower shop in Scottsdale and recomend them all the time. Mine was blue and my sisters was green. She should not worry anyone. I have been to her bakery so there is no question about health codes.

Jaz, I think I have been clear that she is capable of making good cakes. But she really dropped the ball on mine. This is something that I would want to know if I were looking for a cake baker. I am certainly not denying that she could make a good cake. She just didn't in my case. Also, welcome to the boards, but joining it during this debate (and after she was probably kicked off the board for a second time) and then commenting on it, while acknowledging that you are friends, does not make you very credible.

I spoke with The Cake Contessa again..... and I have read other reviews......... and gone on to other forums and have found great reviews.

I feel very confident in our choice.  I am truly sorry you had a bad experience. I guess it shows that no one can have perfection.  It just sucks that the 1 out of  100  had to be you on your day.

I hope the rest of your day was great.  From most brides...... I find ........that there is always something ....that goes wrong.  At least your guests didn't know.  My 1st wedding cake was horrible green frosting with a center that tasted like baby food.

I am not doing a gluten free cake we are thrilled with our selection of our double chocolate cake with raspberry filling and white chocolate frosting..... Can you tell I like chocolate Smile
