Possible DJ Snag....

So we got an amazing deal on a dj for $600 for our wedding. Now before everyone goes "You get what you pay for", this company did my cousins wedding and did an awesome job. Everyone had a great time and one of the big things I remembered about her wedding was how great the DJ was. She had only positive things to say about them so aside from the price, that's why we hired them. Did I also mention they are all experienced radio DJs as well?

Anyway, we booked them back in March and now I can't get them to return my call to set up a meeting. I have about 5 weeks left, and I can only meet them during the weekend as they are based out of the Flint area and I am in Royal Oak. My weekends are quickly filling up with other vender meetings.

Two questions:
1. They keep saying they will call me at a certain time, and I never get a call. This has happened twice (so maybe "keep saying" is a bit of an exaggeration...). He said they have been really busy. I know they DJ during the week at local bars, but still, to me that's no reason they can't make a phone call. Am I being unfair?

2. Any recommendations for a new DJ? Seems like most DJs are running about $900-1200. At this point, there really isn't room in the budget as everything is being paid off this month and can't really save extra money since we've already committed on everything else.

Thanks ahead of time girls! You are the best!

It's not unreasonable to expect them to call you back, but if you're calling them on the weekend, then give them a few days to call back. Also, I wouldn't expect them to meet you on a weekend, especially since it's still wedding season. Yes, they have a duty to you as a customer, but they also have a duty to fulfill their obligations to the couple who is getting married that day.

If you have to meet them in person and they have offered to meet you during the week at a local bar, then I would take them up on that offer.

As for new DJs - if you are seriously concerned about your DJ, then take a look at DJ recommendations that have been posted on the board, there are LOTS of good recommendations under $1000.

Royal Oak to Flint isn't too bad of a drive if you have to meet during the week. Sure, it sucks but it's doable if that's the only time they'll meet. Why do you want to meet with them now? I'd be aggravated that I wasn't receiving calls too.. Sorry

I was hoping to meet with them only because we've talked over the phone. The guy who is suppose to be DJing (not a real word?) actually works with FI's dad, so he's met him. I just have a hard time handing over $600 to someone that I haven't met in person. The reason I have been trying to get them on the phone is to figure out a time when we can meet. I don't know when they want to, but I understand they are obviously busy during the weekend, so we were thinking weekend mornings. We could do a late night meeting but either way, I can't get them to call me back to set that up.

I'll check out the stickies for recommendations. Thanks girls!

    1. Have you signed a contract?

    2. Do you use email?

    3. Why do you have to meet in person?

    1. Yes, signed a contract and put down $100 deposit. (Wasn't the strongest contract either). We are prepared to walk away from the deposit if it gets to that point.
    2. Yes, I use email, already have emailed them though : /
    3. I want to meet them in person because I don't want to hand over the rest of the $600 without talking to them. I can't even get them to call me to go over everything anyway... I think I could even settle with setting up a scheduled phone call to go over the day, but at this point, they seem pretty flakey and I am worried about having a DJ for the reception.

You can try Mark Hudy, I think his website is musicbymark.com, he did 2 of my friends' weddings and he will be dj'ing mine.  Good luck!

Try Brendan Pfaff, he is like 700 or 750.  He did an AWESOME job at my wedding last month=)  He will even come to your house for a meeting and go over every detail with you.  He was the best vendor to work with.

Thanks girls! I think by the sounds of it I should give them more time before I hit the panic button.

Sue-n-Kevin you have a PM back but you better not check it until next week!!!

Thank you for all of the advice and recommendations. Hopefully I won't need them!

I second Mark Hudy!  He is doing my wedding October and has been fantastic with communication.  He is very organized and has done hundreds of weddings and other events.
