How far in advance to turn in baptism, etc papers?

We meet with our Priest on Tuesday to discuss the ceremony and other things. We already met with him once, an initial meeting, get the paperwork, etc. FI THINKS he told us it has to be in 30 days prior (but he may be  thinking of the marriage license). I think he said as soon as we can get it. Obviously he'll let us know on Tuesday, but wondering if we should go get it beforehand-my call to the rectory hasn't been returned yet so thought I'd ask if there is a specific time frame. Thanks!

  • Usually baptism certificates, etc. have to be newly issued (within 6 months) to make sure that there are no impediments to marriage. Other than that, I would imagine that most parishes would prefer stuff be taken care of expediently.

IIRC, your wedding is this summer, so I would imagine that the sooner the better would be great. 30 days sounds more like the deadline than the first day to drop stuff off.

  • That's what I thought. Not a big deal since we both live in the same county as the Churches we need to get our papers from. Thanks!

  • We had our second meeting with our Priest tonight!  It's so exciting.

We are seven months out and had our Baptism records though we are a little ahead of the curve.  My FI is from the same diocese as he was baptized and I was baptized in a different state.

  • Our priest had us turn in our baptism papers with our completion documents from our classes.  We go in next week to talk about the ceremony!!!!!
  • maybe its different in other parts of the country, but here in MA, all i had to do was contact the church where i was baptised (VT) and they sent everything directly to the church where we married.  once the priest received it, he just had me verify that it was mine.

It's funny you say that because in NY, they sent FI his own record but I was baptized in MA (Billerica) as well and they sent it.  I did call my parish here in NY so they would keep an eye out for it.

  • Hmmm....my H was baptised in New Jersey, and they sent the record directly to our parish here. I was received into the Church (in Arizona) at the parish where we were married, so the parish just took care of it internally. I wonder if there are regional differences or if it just whatever the parish does.

Probably a little of both?  Who really knows.  I was just worried it was going to get lost though my parish I was baptized at said they would call me if they couldn't find and and I had called my current parish to be on the lookout for it and they told me they would call if they didn't get it.  No call and all was good.
