We used DJ Mark Cherone from Curtis Knight Entertainment and he was awesome!  I've also seen a lot of good reviews for other DJs from their company as well.  I'd highly recommend them and I think they are close to your price range.  I think we paid $900 for 4 hrs.

Stay away from The Pros. They are a major bait and switch operation.

I went to a show last night and thought they were crap.  Try DJ Dave Lynch.  He gets awesome reviews and is on the lower priced side.

I would also recommend  Mark Cherone.  We are using him for our wedding.

We are using DJ by Jake.  He is based in the metro west area and gets really good reviews on Wedding Wire although I haven't seen too many reviews on these boards.  He is definately in your price range -- we are paying around $700 for 5 hours.  If you are looking for extras like fancy lighting or someone who is a game show host-type announcer then he probably isn't what you are looking for.  We just wanted a good DJ who uses the music to get the party going and makes a few basic announcements, and his rates are very reasonable.

Jake and John are booked for my date! :( I guess I should have nailed down music sooner.

You could check out Joe Dupuis with In Tune Productions... he charges $150/hr for Capecod weddings, and $175/hr for anything outside the cape. He's really sweet. We almost went with him but changed our minds with what we wanted. He was great to work with, very attentive, and so willing to make sure you're happy. I have no idea how he is at weddings though. But he's worth checking out! I had one hell of a time finding a cheap DJ, so I'm not sure how many others there are out there that are less than $1000!

    Goodluck! :)
