Anyone looking at or have a yellow sapphire ring or another stone besides a diamond? I kind of want something that's a little different but I can't seem to find something like a yellow sapphire in a regular jewelry store and wouldn't want my BF buying a ring online. Post pics please!

Marley BF refuses to go ring shopping with me! He doesn't want me to have any idea when the proposal will happen and isn't able to afford it right now. So I let my mom know what I like and he knows to go to her when he's ready. So yes maybe I'm a little crazy for ring browsing haha but I want her to know EXACTLY what I want just in case it happens sooner rather than later! The yellow sapphires I've seen online seem to be less expensive than the traditional diamond ring I originally picked out also. So if I can find something less expensive and a little more unique that will be good.
[QUOTE]It's nice to want something different, just remember that a diamond has qualities that other stones will not have such as it's scratch resistance. It's the hardest natural material. That's where the saying, "a diamond is forever" comes from. Other stones can get scratched, chipped, or start looking dull with wear and tear. Just something to keep in mind!

While it's true that diamonds are the hardest stones, sapphires and rubies are both a 9 (on a 10 pt scale, on which a diamond is a 10.) Compared to a diamond they are slightly softer but not so much that you would notice it.
And the saying "a diamond is forever" is a clever marketing and advertising slogan for the diamond industry, not a saying. Diamonds are usually used for engagement rings solely because of brilliant marketing, it has nothing to do with them being superior to other options.

On the scale used to measure the hardness of a particular gemstone, a diamond comes in at a 10 because it is the hardest mineral on earth. The sapphire follows the diamond on this scale, coming in at a 9. While this is good information to have, I personally don't thinks it's enough of a reason to decide against a sapphire.

... and not to get too preachy, but the phrase "a diamond is forever" is clever De Beers propaganda from the 1930's, when the sale of diamonds was in decline. It was their goal to convince consumers that the diamond was the only suitable precious stone for a gift so special as the engagement ring.
leese19- My sister was engaged before and she had 3 saphire stones, one yellow as the center stone and two white ones on the side. She went to a local jeweler which does have more selection and way better quality and prices. How you find what you want.

Maybe you should wait until he can afford a ring to start looking for one. I bet that doesn't make him feel so hot if you're looking for rings like crazy and he has told you now is not the time anyways...
If you find a setting (what's called a "semi-mount") that you like, you can buy a sapphire or ruby or whatever to fit and they'll set it in the ring. We bought my ring as a semi-mount, and could have easily fit in any type of round stone. Honestly, I think my ring would have looked lovely with a sapphire, too (even though I wouldn't change a thing)!
Also, sapphire was the traditional stone for engagement, before diamonds were popular.
