Question about make-up hygiene

I have never had a make-up artist before and I am suddenly worried about how it works.  Is it important to be worried about cleanliness or anything else with respect to products and brushes?  The MUA I just contacted does both traditional and airbrush, so it may not be a huge concern, but I really am new to this realm.  I do know that I want someone else to do it for me on that day.  What else do I need to know?

On a side note, should I ask about the lipstick she uses during the practice and buy some for touch-ups?

Thanks,
Nico

Re: Question about make-up hygiene

  • When I have had my makeup done they always use little throw away tools or they use their brushes. I would trust that they are clean since they are professionals. I also noticed that they always put the product somewhere, like on their hand to apply it on your face, that way they are not "double dipping" into the actuall container. (I hope that makes sense)

I would buy the lipstick she uses unless you have a favorite, I would bring that one then. I also would suggest a trial run so you can ask tons of questions, it may make you feel more comfortable on the day of.

  • Thank you!  There will definitely be a trial and the throw-away brushes and using a palette, such as a hand, make perfect sense.  I feel much better now!
  • Like PP said, if you're hiring a professional, they know better & have to be hygenic. If, heaven forbid, you do notice some unsanity behavior, then you know you won't be hiring them. Regarding the lipstick, that depends. Some MUAs will give you the lipstick/gloss that way you can touch yourself up during the night. You'll have to ask. If she doesn't, then it's not a bad idea to buy one for yourself. You can never have too many lipsticks, right!

My MUA just so happens to be a friend & also a guest, so I don't have to worry about that. She'll be there the whole night!
  • I had a MUA when I was in a friend's wedding do some things that I wasn't entirely comfortable with as far as double-dipping went.  I was too distracted by other stuff to say anything at the time, but if it ever happened again, I think it would be fine to just say "Hey, I'm not comfortable with that as far as hygiene goes, could you do X instead please?"  And, you know, I wouldn't go back to that MUA.
  • As far as the lipstick goes, my MUA told me to find a lipstick I liked for her to use and I bought one from the Mac counter. That gave me a bit more confidence about her practices to be honest...

  • My MUA loved her brushes, so she cleaned them between each person.  She did eyeliner and mascara with throw away.  She always put the product in a dish or on the back of her hand to apply, never double dipped, except mascara, but she used a fresh wand each dip.  It's a lot of wands!

She told me which lipstick would look good and which gloss and I purchased them so I would have them always, but otherwise, she had throw away wands to use on her own lip products aswell.

A good make up artist will always be concerned with proper hygiene.
