AW: cake ball wedding cake option

I've been chatting with my cake lady and she makes the most amazing cake pops and cake balls, so I'm thinking I might to a cake ball wedding cake. I'd have a mini cake at the top to "cut" and the rest would be cake balls or pops, like in the pic below (but in white/maybe light shades of purple).

I'd most likely have cupcakes as well for those who'd prefer a cupcake. I'd also like to have her make bride and groom cake pops for us to "cheers" to instead of sharing pieces of cake. Something like this:

Any thoughts??

  • I love that idea! (Especially the "toasting" pops!!!) If you do this, I would probably skip the cupcakes, though. I'm sure no one would think "Where's the regular cake/cupcakes?" and it would save some cash. I really love this though!

I'm just worried about quantity. We'll have about 250 for the reception; I don't think we can fit 250 cake balls on the cake :(
I suppose we could do up some cute holders for the extras...

  • This is SO cute!!!  It's like a French croquembouche but cake!  I agree with morenachica.  If you do this you don't need to do cupcakes.

<div>Whoa. In that case, I retract my previous statement. lol That would be a lot of balls! haha (Sorry.. I'm super tired right now =P) Either way, great idea =)</div><div>
</div><div>Oh, have you thought about having a dessert table with other things? Like, cake balls, mini cannolis, pie, doughnuts etc? I think that would be fun too.</div>
  • That's a great idea too - we could definitely have some options available :)

This is what I want to do.  Cookies, a couple cakes, cupcakes, and definitely chocolate covered strawberries!

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • You could always have some stored away for the rest of the guests, the same as people having a traditional wedding cake often have a smaller cake and the sheet cakes stored in the kitchen
  • Ok so it looks like those cake ball cakes are really just for show - not edible :(
They are pinned to the tiers (which are edible). They look fantastic but aren't very practical. So I think we're going to go with this option; this is actually a photo of a stand she has available and it holds over 200 cake pops. I'd have her make 100 mini cupcakes/cakeballs (real ones haha) to have on the side. I love that the bride and groom are on top and we still have a little cake. We can "cheers" our cake pops :)
I'd stick to white, add some feathers on the tiers and an eggplant ribbon around each layer of the wood.

I'm thinking a mix of styles like these:
