Friday Night Wedding

Need your thoughts please. ....My daughter's wedding is on a Friday evening at 6:30, and reception following at another location.  The ceremony will probably last 30-45 minutes.  They are planning on taking pictures afterwards in the church  (majority of pictures will be taken during the afternoon)., which should take bout a 1/2 hr.  Then its onto the reception.  I'm figureing they will arrive at the reception at 8.

Since this is a work day, and with people coming right from work to the ceremony...they will be starving.  They were thinking about  letting their guests eat dinner during the time that the pictures are being taken at the church.   Then when they get to the reception, the DJ can announce the bridal party and them.     Then around 10-or 10:30 bringing out the hor'derves.  I just don't know if this is right to do or what.

Has anyone ever seen this done before?   Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I have a Friday night wedding. My ceremony is from 6-6:30, I have a cocktail hour with passed appetizers from 6:30-7:30, and then dinner will be served around 7:30-7:45. I am taking as many photos as possible BEFORE the ceremony, and then the remaining ones during cocktail hour.

I do agree that SOMETHING needs to be served immediately following the ceremony, but I'm not sure dinner is the right thing to do. When will the WP eat? Can you have heavy apps immediately following the ceremony?

    <div>I agree.</div><div>
</div><div>I also know that if I was attending a 6:30 wedding, I would definitely have a snack or something before I went so I wasn't ravenous.</div><div>

  • I agree with PP's.
But, I would definitely have the apps first then dinner. I think serving dinner immediately after is kind of silly. I would rather just do apps and eat with the WP.

  • I am having a Friday evening wedding as well.

    Ceremony 5pm-5:30pm
Travel time from one location to the other - approx 30 min
Cocktail hour (with hors d'oeuvres) 6:15pm-7:15pm
    Dinner & reception 7:15pm-12:15am

I suggest you have the hors d'oeuvres with a cocktail hour while they are taking the pics.

I agree with this. I think if you have heavy apps available right when people arrive at the reception that it should be fine. :)

  • I agree- I'm having a Friday night wedding as well with the ceremony starting at 5:30 and will be taking all the pictures after the ceremony (we're not seeing each other before the wedding) so everyone will go to cocktail hour while we're taking photos.  We ordered a bunch of passed appetizers for everyone to tide them over until dinner starts around 7:30pm.  Luckily everyone is either coming from out of town or is retired so I don't think we'll have to deal with a hungry after work crowd, but I think everyone will be ready to eat.
  • Completely agree with PP. Heavy apps would be best during the cocktail hour. Will there be a cocktail hour in your scenario?

Also, even though it's called a cocktail hour, if definitely DOES NOT need to be an hour long. But, from the time the ceremony ends to when the wedding party (WP) arrives would be the cocktail "hour." Then, if they run over, and they will- its inevitable, then food will be served and the WP won't miss out on their meal and they can all eat together.
I feel like the WP would not get to eat because they won't sit down, they'll be too busy entertaining. Especially B&G!
