Ski Resort Honeymoon, Colorado

Hey ladies!  I am in law school and can't take off a week or 10 days for my honeymoon, so we are going on a shorter (4 night, 5 day) honeymoon in the mountains of Colorado.  We are staying in Steamboat Springs.  I noticed that the closest major airport is Denver (which is about 160 miles from the resort) and  I was wondering if anyone had suggesstions as far as flying into Denver and renting a car for the 3 hour drive, taking a shuttle, or just paying more to fly from Denver into a smaller regional airport closer to the resort.  Also, neither of us have ever skied so I was wondering if 4 days was too short to try and learn to ski and if so, what other options were available as far as outdoor activites go.  We both opted for a cold weather honeymoon over the usual all-inclusive beach route.  Any suggestions for saving money and utilizing all of our time there would be greatly appreciated.  HELP!

  • When do you plan to come out here? I would rent a car that way your able to get around while your out here and you can stop by some places along to way to break up the drive but just depends on how you feel about driving in snow.  I would say 4 days is plenty of time....I am pretty sure you'll have enough skiing with 2 days especially if you've never been.  You could check out the strawberry hot springs in steamboat...I am sure you'll enjoy it after a long day skiing.
  • I agree, after having gone to CO this past summer; it's definitely going to be beneficial to rent a car.

I think 4 days is a sufficient amount of time to start learning and have fun with it.
  • Rent a car.  The drives are gorgeous plus there isn't a lot of public transport.  Also it will probably be cheaper to rent a car than to fly into a smaller airport.

  • I'm not a skier, but I went on a business trip last year to Salt Lake City, and I have been to Denver. I'm not trying to trash anything in Colorado, because it is a lovely area. However, Park City UT was AMAZING!!!! It's where they have the Sundance Film Festival every year, and it's an adorable town near wonderful skiing. The winter Olympics were there and they still have a lot of stuff outside town from the Olympics.

Plus, it's only 38 miles from the airport in Salt Lake City. The main street in Park City is really cool, and I'm sure they have a lot of great resorts and other places to stay.

Between these 2 business trips, which were my first ones to both of these areas, the mountains in Utah took my breath away..........while Colorado was nice, I couldn't get over Utah.

Just passing that along in case you continue to be worried about the distance to the airport.
  • Thanks so much for your honesty!  I'll definitely look into Park City!
