Trying to be conservative

I'm finally getting married. I can't believe it and all the planning is coming into place nicely.

I look at dresses and want to cry.

I have two problems. One I had gastric bypass 5 years ago and I have some skin that is a little saggy so I'd like to be covered up. I also have a small tattoo on my shoulder and others on my chest and back that I am really hoping to have the dress cover.

Does anyone have any suggestions where I might find such a thing or a bridal shop I can go to where when you tell them that they sigh make noises and make them actually work. Everything else is perfect I just want the dress to match the rest.

Re: Trying to be conservative

  • If you find a dress you like that doesn't meet all of your requirements then there are always alterations you can get done like having sleeves or straps added to cover up the areas up top that you don't want to show.

If you're trying to find a specific bridal shop then try posting on your local board for some suggestions.
  • You're just going to have to try on dresses to see what works best for your body.  As far as the tattoos, look at boleros as an option to help cover you up.

  • Yes - That's what I'm going to say, you're definitely looking for the LDS style wedding dress! Check the suggestion from @edielaura for inspiration, then you're supposed to go to your local bridal stores to try some dresses on, which will help you know if that kind of dresses can bring out your figures ;-)
  • With my wedding being in August I am hoping to have Short Sleeves but slightly longer than a Cap sleeve my back covered and zero cleavage.

I'm having a Catholic wedding also I just feel it would be respectable even if I didn't have all this ink that I got as a younger dumber woman.

Ditto LDS stores.  Also conservative Judaism requires longer sleeved dresses and higher necklines so you may find something that suits you at a Jewish store.

Alternatively, boleros work great for covering up backs/shoulders.

There are tons of online LDS stores but ultimately you'd want to find a brick & mortar store to try on different styles at some point.
  • If you find a dress you love that doesn't cover as you'd like (like a strapless one) you can always get a shrug that matches the dress.  These are beautiful without being frumpy and constricting.  I have lost about 120 lbs too and am lucky enough to have surgery on my arms before the wedding so some of my "sag" will be taken care of so I know where you're coming from.

  • Jasmine Bridal has a line called "Temple Ready" that lets you pick from a number of different necklines, sleeve lengths, etc. Some mainstream designers will also sell you extra yardage of the fabric from your dress to make sleeves or whatever, which is what I'm doing to make my dress acceptable to my rabbi.
  • Dermablend for the tattoo and Spank for the body refining.

I wanted to be conservative, too, but I don't like the look of plain, traditional wraps and boleros! For $125, I bought a long sleeve lace jacket at David's Bridal. It's beautiful, requires no alteration, and covers to the fingers. Actually picked it out before the dress, and it's great that it comes off for our June wedding!
