Do any of you knotties, or your hubbies, have tungsten carbide rings? I am looking at a few I like for FI for his band but I have no idea what the metal is like. I've read that you can't size them? Is that true?
We actually have a set that we never used because H wanted to buy me a white gold set. They're actually really nice, a lot lighter than I thought. And yep, you can't resize them.
I've read that tungsten can shatter if you drop it. Don't know if that's actually true.
Some jewelry stores have lifetime warranties you can buy that cover replacements should you ever need a new one (because you can't resize). We got H's ring from Helzberg, and their replacement plan was very reasonable.
My partner has one, and it's beautiful. You are right, they cannot be resized. I'm not sure where the PP heard that they shatter, but my partner has dropped it, banged it, hit it aginast stuff, etc. and it's held up just fine.
Here are our rings. My partner's is standing up and is a tungsten with little baby diamonds. My ring is white gold.
Websites/blogs where our wedding has been featured:
We just bought my FI's wedding band and decided to go with white Gold. It looks exactly like the picture in mcda04's post.
We chose white Gold because of the lifetime value this metal will hold. White Gold can be resized, polished, brushed and/or rhodium dipped to maintain it's appearance. If cared for properly, it will always look brand new.
Where as, with Palladium and Platinum it will eventually get darker and become grey in appearance, not mention scratch easily. I'm not too familiar with Tungsten or Steel rings, other than they cannot be resized and they are not as precious a metal as Gold. We were more interested in the value of the metal we were purchasing and the overall integrity of it to last and maintain over the years. However, I know plenty of friends who chose Tungsten and Palladium rings and seem to be happy with them.

Yea apparently they will only shatter if hit on the right exact spot. I found one I really like for FI now I just need to figure out a size.
H has a Tungsten ring and absolutely LOVES it! He gets tons of compliments on it too. He liked that it is virtually indestructible and was also very very affordable.
It's true you can't size them. He had to order it in the right size and they could not do half sizes. So it's a little big in the winter but fits perfectly in the summer.
FI wanted Tungston until I told him that if he ever gets his finger hurt to the point of not being able to slide the ring off, they can't cut the ring. He works in construction so the possibility of breaking a finger is pretty high. If they can't cut the band and it comes down to it, I have seen them take a finger off.

This isn't true. All tungsten rings have a built in "shatter point" which is why they can shatter if you drop them (but it has to hit right at the shatter point). In addition, ERs have special tools they can use to cut the rings off or break them. They only reason they would ever need to "take the finger off" is if it's swollen and damaged to the point that they wouldn't be able to get ANY ring off.
Ditto to tungsten shattering...H's came off while he was drying his hands in the bathroom and it flew off and cracked....we are in the process of figuring out if we can get it replaced or if we have to buy a new one.
FI's is tungsten. It is crazy affordable. I feel awful that he paid thousands for my ring, but his was only thirty dollars on Amazon. The jewelry stores jack up the price nearly ten times what it is worth. The exact same ring was three hundred at Kays and thirty on Amazon.
My FI is a metallurgical engineer and specifically chose tungsten carbide for his ring. He is often in a steel mill setting, and this is the most durable material that rings are currently made of. They can really take a beating, are scratch proof, and will pretty much look the same after 10 years as they do they day you buy them. As others have said, they have a built-in shatterpoint for safety purposes. They're supposed to be more difficult to shatter than some people's experience, though!
The issue of not being able to have it resized is less worrisome since replacing it will be incredibly affordable. You don't have the sentimental value of it being the ring from your wedding day, though.

I've been looking on Overstock and found two that are less than $50. He isn't too worried about a ring so I don't want to spend a fortune on one.

I work as a medic and in an emergency department... not all of them come off. A ring cutter will absolutely NOT take a Tungsten ring off. Any other metal can be cut off. So yes, if push comes to shove they may end up taking a finger. And yes, we can take off other rings and not Tungsten in almost every single case.

While you can't cut Tungsten, it is simple enough to remove the ring from a swollen or injured finger by clamping vice pliers onto the ring and slowly tightening until the ring break into multiple pieces. The ability to break the ring may have something to do with people mentioning that they have shattered when hit or dropped at certain angles.
If your emergency department is removing fingers instead of investing in a simple pair of pliers that you could get at any hardware store I am a bit worried!

They aren't taking fingers off of people jsut for that, there are many cases where if the ring was a softer metal, with would be able to be cut off. People amputate up to the first or second knuckle, and if it was a softer metal, the ring would be able to be cut. Pilars will not always cut them. It's a case by case basis. Usually the finger has already been partially amputated due to an injury, and it is further amputated due to not being able to cut the ring.

You squeeze the ring, you don't cut it. Tungsten rings are made with the shatterpoints specifically so that they can be removed if needed. My husband has a Tungsten ring, and happens to be an EMT. If there was such an issue with being able to get them off in emergencies, I can assure you he would NOT be wearing it.
