Italian Customs and Traditions

FI and I are both Italian. (Me fully, and him half). I really want to incorporate that into our wedding, but I cannot find any customs or traditions that have to do with italian weddings. The most i've been able to find was that italians tend to have extremely lavish, drawn out events. But we wanted more of a tradition or custom that displayed our heritage. Any suggestions?

IMy fiance and I are both full Italian, with his family only here in NY for about 20 years.  We also have a lot of family coming from Italy for the wedding, so we definitely needed to have italian traditions.  You can do the Italian confetti (Jordan almonds, try and buy from Italy, they are much better than the brands here in US).  5 need to be given out at a time (attached to favor or at each place setting).  You can also do the tarantella, the "dollar dance", or just play some italian songs.  Try serving some sort of Italian food...if you can't do the entrees, then perhaps apps at the cocktail hour or a Viennese hour (looks much better than just a Viennese table).  Does anyone make their own wine?  You could incorporate that somehow, maybe serve it at the Rehearsal dinner.  Also, for drinks, Limoncello is a big Italian drink.  You can also just do italian favors...oil bottles, wine, espresso sets, pasta servers, etc.  There's plenty to incorporate, just depends on how much you want.  Good luck!
  • I am also 100% italian and really big into my heritage. I am trying to think of little touches. I am definitely having a pasta course as part of the meal. I have also thought about giving out small bottles of limoncello as a favor (possibly homemade). We may order some pastries to serve with the wedding cake at the end of the night and we are adding on an espresso package which includes cappuccino and all the liquors (Sambuca, Frangelico, Limoncello, etc). And of course the tarantella!

  • DD married into an Italian family and insisted on canolli along with wedding cake.  The groom's side of the family really appreciated it.
  • We had a big fat Italian wedding.  Not too many traditions but lots of Italian food, booze and music.

  • I'm Italian. I will likely do the Jordan Almonds, and the cake will have aatleast one layer with marscapone cheese frosting (my favorite). We will serve pasta as well.

  • my family is Sicilian and you need CANOLLIS!!! I'm sure you have a fav italian bakery around you that your family buys them from. Jordan almonds tend to be in the favors for most. Also  you could do a money bag which is traditional. the Italian olive oil favors and espresso sets are good too. we are doing coffee packets that say "the perfect blend"
  • H and I are both Italian and we gave the five Jordan almonds as favors. They were packaged in the traditional tulle bag and placed in a mini Chinese takeout box and wrapped with a ribbon. We put a card inside that had the Jordan almond poem, and on the reverse side a little thank you note. We didn't do a money bag or dance. We did the cannolis and liqueurs afterwards, had specialties like braciole during the cocktail hour, etc. I'm hungry just thinking about it!

My son and his bride made limoncello for favors.  They affixed tags on the bottles so that they could double as escort cards as well.  They also made up cards for guests that listed 4 different cocktails that could be made from the limoncello.

They made homemade labels that we glued onto bottles like these....

The favor was very well received.
  • I am half Sicilian and quite a few of my full Sicilian family members attended my wedding. Our favors were Jordan almonds, and my Nonna insisted on making her signature cookies for the reception. Literally no one could stop her. I didn't go all out on the Italian traditions, mostly because of budget. I think small touches are just as meaningful as being too lavish.
