HP6 (spoilers)

i thought it was a far more brutal and adult film than the others.  first indication -- they left in the scene where malfoy breaks harry's nose by kicking him in the face.  THIS ISN'T YOUR FATHER'S HP, BIOTCHES.it was also very sexual, in a "these kids are growing up" kind of way.  they are getting those funny feelings and this is how we express that in film.the scenes with hermione getting all verklempt over not being with ron made me a little verklempt.  there, there, dear --  i know how it feels, honey.there were two moments that could be "baby's first trauma" moments -- 1) katie bell touches the necklace, closeup on her screaming, and then getting thrown (not falling) to the ground and then 2) all the bodies crawling out the lake and swarming hp and dumbledore.

Re: HP6 (spoilers)

  • I heard several kids in the audience get grossed out by the bodies in the lake. It's definitely not a kid's movie, but then again, the book wasn't exactly sunshine and roses either. It was a good setup to the last two movies. Also, MIL had never seen a HP movie and she was able to follow along fine.
  • I'm looking forward to seeing it. That's right. I clicked on a spoilers post when I hadn't seen the movie yet. Also, I don't really understand why people are so up in arms over "spoilers" for this movie. The book came out, what, 5 years ago? Anyway, I'm making fBIL take me this week. I expect the bodies scene to give me nightmares. Even the short clip of it in the trailer was scary for me.
  • I was surprised they made the move PG, esp after actually seeing it. I think the others were at least PG13. There was a lot of subtle sexual jokes and there was a lot more violence. I loved the Katie Bell scene. I can see how it would be traumatizing to a small child not expecting it but they did a great job with it.I jumped when the hand came out of the water and grabbed Harry. I knew it was coming, was waiting for it, and still jumped. DH laughed at me.

  • I agree that it wasn't a kid friendly movie, but the book clearly wasn't either. I saw a few problems in terms of setup though. 1. The Burrow? Hello! Where did that come from? 2. No mention of Bill's injury. 3. No mention of Hufflepuff's cup. I guess they can backtrack to catch up on that in one of the final movies. There were several things I really liked though. 1. The Quiddich scene was way better. I actually believed and enjoyed it. 2. Draco was also a lot better. I enjoyed his performance. 3. Did you catch the reference to Umbridge? I loved how Fred and George had the doll riding on the high wire screaming, "I will have order!" I laughed out loud in the theater.
  • I jumped too. My friend laughed.
  • I was disappointed in the lack of Voldemort flashbacks in regards to the Horcruxes (the cup and the old lady, his mother, when he returned to Hogwarts asking for the Defense Against the Dark Arts position). I know it would have had to be a 2 parter (like the last book is being done), but I felt those were very important. Maybe they'll add them into the Deathly Hollows.
  • Yes, and they didn't talk about the ring. I realize that there would have to have been a lot of setup, but the ring is an integral part of the whole horcrux thing. Also, when Harry got Slughorn's memory of Tom asking about horcruxes, they didn't mention animals. I thought they left the Ginny/Harry thing sort of hanging.
  • But the Ginny/Harry thing was left hanging pretty much at the end of the book too. Yeah, the horcruxes needed way more focus. I feel kind of bad for the movie people though. When this script was approved, the last book hadn't even been written, so how could they REALLY know what needed to stay in the movie?
  • They also minimized the whole Half-blood Prince aspect. The other spells, the trying to find out who it was and then finding out at the end that it was Snape.
  • I liked the Burrow fire. I thought it really brought home the reality of war - people all over the Wizarding world were being terrorized, kidnapped, killed. They referenced it in the book, but that one scene really encapsulated all those references. I thought it was a good addition. (And I just assumed they rebuilt with magic. Isn't that how they built the Burrow in the first place?)Of course, I try to take the movies sort of on their own, as their own thing. Expecting too much adeherence to the books just results in disappointments, and I think that every HP has been a good film that captured the spirit of the book that inspired it.
