Name change

Since many of us have gotten married recently or are getting married soon and chaning our names, let's start a list of things we need to change:-social security card (do this 1st- take marriage license and birth certificate or passport)-drivers license (do this next- you can't change your name on your bank account without it- take marriage license and birth certificate or passport) Spam or I can expain the process to change an out of state license to an in state one with the name change, and Future can explain just the name change-bank accounts (take new drivers license and marriage certificate)-car title (take car title and marriage license to tag agency)-insurance (car, health, renter/homeowner)-credit cards-student loans-passport-investments (stocks, 401(k), mutual funds, etc)

This isnt really a name change, but we are also getting out own phone plan so thats another thing to think about. and speaking of passports I am not sure how to go about it yet, but dont you have to get that changed too?

Does anyone know the costs involved in the name changed for this list?I am getting a passport for the honeymoon for the first time. The passport office gave me the form to send off to change the name later. I have to travel under my maiden name, book tickets under my maiden name, and traveling with my DL with Maiden name. After arriving home and changing all the other things that AR has listed then you have to send you marriage license off with your old passport and they will send you a new one. Its no charge as long as the name change is done 1 year from when you applied for the original passport (not one year from the marriage).

Social security card was free. The driver's license was 25.50 for me since I was exchanging an out of state one for an Oklahoma license. I don't know what the cost for just chanigng your name would be. The car title was $11 for the fees associated with notarizing and filing it, but no new taxes had to be paid on the vehicle. Bank account was free, but I need to order new checks with my married name. Don't forget to request a new check card too.I'm still working on the rest of the list, so I don't know how much my passport will cost to change. Probably the entire fee, since I've had it several years. And I'll lose my pretty Iceland stamp in it. :<(

AR - Thanks for the pricing info. They will return your old passport so at least you will get to keep it.

I've been busy today...my student loans and car insurance only had me tell them my new last name over the phone, not fax/mail in a copy of the marriage license. Other than being on hold for eons and eons, that was easy.

Good post AR!Just wanted to say that for my student loan and credit card I had to mail them a copy of our marriage license and a copy of my new DL, and a request of what I wanted done.  The request was pretty much "My name has changed, please update my student loan account #12345.  Marriage license and DL copies enclosed", and I had to sign it.One of my cc companies let me change it over the phone, the other didn't, and both companies that I have my student loans through asked me to mail them the above info., so just be aware that a phone call may not be enough.

Sounds like I lucked out then! I actually would have perferred that they require legal verification of my name change, not just that I told them so.
