Weird centerpiece idea....?!

ok so i dont want flowers as centerpieces because 1) i dont really like flowers and 2) there not in the budget ...so ive been thinking and thinking FOREVER what i want to do... so tell me if my idea is crazy/dumb/cruel or all of the above.. ok so i wanted to buy big fishbowls fill the bottom with sand (from the beach) and starfish (fake ones) but go to a pet store and buy salt water fish and fill the bowl with salt water from the ocean (this was i can just release the fish in the ocean at the end of the night) and then put floating tea lights on top..?!?!?! or is peta going to come after me?! TIA!!!

Re: Weird centerpiece idea....?!

  • I don't think the fish are going to survive even if you throw them back into the ocean at the end of the night. I am assuming that just throwing them into the water on the shore is different than where they naturally live, so they probably would die anyway. So I guess if you are cool with the idea of them sacrificing their lives for your reception, than it would be a good idea (I am being funny). But honestly, I am kind of the crazy animal rights girl on the board, so with that being said, I would try to think of another idea. Not being mean, just honest :)
  • I completely agree, and quite honestly more than one of your guests would KNOW they are not going to survive, OR even worse they would die before the reception is over..probably not a good omen for you beginning your lives together!   It sounds beautiful, but probably not a good idea..
  • BTW if you are getting married in FLA, why not just get beta fish (that can survive) and do the same idea with fresh water fish?  This is a commonly done thing for weddings..the guests can then take the fish home!
  • damn thats what i thought (about them dying..) thought i would of been cool but NO i do not want the poor little fishies to sacrifice their lives for my reception lol... blah! back to the drawing board! or maybe just keep the idea minus the fish?!?!
  • Ahh I like the idea minus the fish! I think it would still look nice, with the sand, starfish, and tea lights. Maybe just buy enough to make one and see how you like it.
  • The idea sounds pretty...but the fish most likely won't survive for very long (sorry to say). We own a salt water aquarium and they are very sensitive. I would try it out once and see how it goes. The cheapest salt water fish are damsels - usually less than $10 a fish. I wouldn't put beach sand in there though, usually that is something that has to "cure". If you want to go the fish route I would try freshwater betas. The local fish stores around here have some great looking cube tanks with a space in the middle for a candle, i think. HTH
  • jamie i would totally do it with freshwater, just thought it would be easier with the ocean right there... but i LOVE the beta fish (and damn i thought i was the genious with a new idea lol) and the fact that guests could take them home (a lot of my guests are from FL) but what about the peoepl who coudlnt??
  • Please don't do any fish. I've been to TWO receptions where the bride did this and about half of the fish died before the reception was over. Not pleasant to be sitting at your dinner table staring at dead fish. Not to mention I really don't think there will be that many people who will be thrilled with the idea of traveling all the way home from Key West with a beta in a bag.Try something else....maybe just starfish and assorted shells with water and sand and floating candles? That would be pretty.
  • What about the fish bowl & floating candle idea and just use really cool leaves or reeds to circle the inside of the vase?  I've seen it done before and they're absolutely beautiful.  You can also add a little food coloring to the water or a rose instead of a candle and change it up a bit.  They're a little on the modern side but pretty nonetheless.
  • I liek the idea, minus the fish. With the sand and floating candle and starfish, you have enough going on without havign to add creatures.
  • I didnt have flower centerpieces either. So we did the hurricane glasses with colored sand on the bottom, filled with water and then 3 floating candles. It was pretty..  and fairly cheap as well! Hope that helps
  • I have some great photos of fishbowls filled with sand shells starfish and a large candle.  I've seen cute ways to use fish but it would be so sad if they go belly up at the reception.  There was an article that said the sound of the music if it's too high can cause them to die.  too many factors to worry about that arent't needed on your special day.  email me at dancinqueen040 at yahoo dot com and i'll email some photos :)
