Bridal Shop Issues

Okay, this might be a little long, but I'm just trying to get some opinions on what steps should be taken, if any... I found my dream dress in January of this year. I put half down so that the order would be placed and was making monthly payments to take care of the balance. I got to the last payment in June, and I figured that payment would be due when the dress arrived. I was then told that the dress wouldn't be in until August, so I felt uncomfortable making that last payment. They told me that if I didn't make the payment, the dress shipment would be delayed, so I just ended up paying it. I stopped by the shop to confirm the date and was told it wouldn't be in until the first week of September. My wedding is October 17 and I know it's going to need to be altered. I've heard some horror stories recently about this bridal shop, which has been in business since the 1950s. My mom also called to confirm the date and they told her that the dress is probably being cut now. Why would it be being cut now if it was supposed to have been ordered in January? I checked the BBB and this shop has 8 complaints in the last 36 months. Am I jumping the gun and stressing out about this too much? Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but something about this just doesn't seem right. I did sign a contract and everything, but will that do me any good if the dress never comes in? Opinions please?

Re: Bridal Shop Issues

  • I agree with what the other brides said. Check to see if you had an approximate delivery date on your contract.Whatever they are doing it, it's definitely not in your favor.I would say, call them again and demand to know when they ordered the dress and why the dress has been delayed. If you have made payments on time, more than likely they dropped the ball.  And you need to be very clear and assertive in pointing the blame squarely where it belongs: on them.  That you make payments on time is your problem, if they cannot give you what they promised to give you then it is their problem.  If you are paying for something you were promised to be in on a certain date, then technically it would be breach of contract.Lawyers are great at making people change their tune. If you have one in the family or know one who would call the shop and just say "Hi I am so and so from the Law Offices of Blah Blah Blah representing a certain Ms.  regarding the status of a service she purchased from you  and that so far you have failed to deliver."  At this point you pretty much shouldn't exactly play nice with these people.  How nice have they been playing with you?
  • I ordered my dress in August of 2008 and it took almost 10 months to come in. Even if they placed the order when you paid, some designers will make other dresses for weddings happening before yours first. That said, paying for the dress before it comes in doesn't sound totally right, but read your contract carefully and see what it says.

  • Here's the down and dirty on what most likely happened with your dress...The shop held your order and placed it much later than when you paid your deposit in January.  They do this to hold on to that money longer and postpone having to pay their wholesale amount to the vendor (designer).  You had plenty of time - Plenty!! - when you ordered in January.  The average production time across the board on wedding gowns  is 12-14 weeks.  Once the designer receives the order, it is put into production immediately.  This way a bridal shop cannot turn around and cancel an order...it ensures that the designer gets their money from the salon. My advice to you is to consider contacting the designer directly, only for the fact that the designer will get upset and call the bridal salon to vent.  (What designer is making your dress?) Once the bridal salon knows you mean serious business and may be on to their game, they should shape up.  They are in breach of the contract because they held your order.  Do you have the original ship date or arrival date in writing or has it all been verbal?  If you do have it in writing, you can hold them to it.  Keep us updated on how it's going.  :)
