Wedding cake sticker shock!

YIKES holy mark up! haha Ok so everyone Ive contacted I can find on the internet has been 4-6$ slice! OMG! A friend of mine recommended an independent baker and she is paying 250$ for a 200 person wedding-- but didnt give me the name-- at least not yet. Anyone know of a baker that is ALOT less? I CAN NOT afford a 600-800$ cake its just NOT in my budget AND we dont even like cake that much... are there any alternatives to a cake? I mean we could do just a small cake just for the whole tradition. But are there other alternatives taht are in like the 200-300 range? TIA ladies

    AND! I dont even want anything extravagant just like a 2-3 tier white cake with little snowfakes or sparkly things on it!

    Cupcakes. We're doing 14 dozen cupcakes (6 flavors) for like $350. Plus we're leaving some without frosting for the kids to decorate. There is obviously no cutting fee or serving fee. People can help themselves.buttercreamcupcakery.com

    Another thought to consider is to do a smaller "brides" cake and do the rest in sheet cakes.  That way, you have a pretty cake for display and cutting but it is a little less expensive.  This is what we are doing to save a little bit of $$.

    You can also do smaller cakes for centerpieces, then its 12-15 each table and you will still have lots left over. Or you can do a dessert buffet with all different cakes Or Cupcakes, many flavor options and affordable, no cutting fee, you can do really cute winter elements on them. Or sheet cakes for service and a very small cake for cutting

    I would suggest what everyone else said.  FYI...I did cupcakes as our centerpieces.  I killed 2 birds with one stone, didn't have to pay for cake and centerpieces.  I used Maggie and Molly's bakery but there are tons of cupcake shops.  Look in bio so you can see what we did...everyone LOVED the cupcakes and the fact that it was a little different.

    Yep - get a small 'fancy' round for the photo op and then cut up a sheet cake for the masses.  Costco does a good job . . .

    If the cake you want isn't very extravagent, have you thought of asking someone you know to make a small two-tier cake and then some sheet cakes. This will dramatically cut the cost. You could always go with a supermarket cake, but I personally don't like the quality. I've made three wedding cakes, and if someone already has the pans and piping materials, it can be done for as little as $50.00 depending on the type of cake and the size.

    Another one here who agrees on the sheet cakes and a small one for cutting...We ended up paying $7 pp for our cake, and when we cut it, there was real ribbon around it, and it TOTALLY demolished that tier of the cake.  At the time, I thought it was hilarious, but looking back, it seems silly to have paid that much, then destroy a layer!  They take the cake right back into the kitchen and slice it, so in my opinion, it was not worth all the money...  We got a sheet cake from Costco for one of our welcome parties and it was AMAZING.  Half a sheet is $16 and the designs are really nice.  Good luck

    Whole Foods is suppose to have fantastic and wholesome wedding cakes that are very affordable. I would just do like a plain white cake with dots or scrolling and then have your florist put real flowers on it.  Good luck!

    I second the idea about sheet cakes from Costco -- I served them at a work function one time and people LOVED it, they are amazingly yummy and moist!! GL!

    Also chiming in with love for Costco sheet cakes! We had one at work a few weeks ago, and it was huge- at least 12" x 18" (probably bigger) and was something like $16. It had some sort of frosting/pudding type thing as a layer in the middle of the cake.     I have not read all the comments but I would not suggest King Soopers- you are totally limited on the style, look, and flavors for your cake. They also freeze it and your cake could be weeks old. I used Amy's Unique Cakes and we paid $205 for 75 people. Good luck!

    WOW! Thanks for all the responses! I like the cupcake idea so Im going to look into taht but it sounds like everyone LOVES costco so definately gonna look into that too :) I really appreciate it more than you know! Planning from Milwaukee with limited google searches and recommendations and people not getting back to you is HARD!

    I am having $300 people and I ordered a 5 layer cake plus a jack daniels grooms cake and mine is $300. She works out of her home but I have had several of my family use her for weddings and birthdays. She is very reasonable and does a great job! Let me know if you would like her contact information!

    I second Amy's Unique Cakes. We paid $3.25/slice for a 3-tier with filling. And she can easily do what you're looking for. Don't know what happened to her website, but you can call her at 720.882.6546.

    You know who else has amazing cakes is Target. The super Target's have a full bakery like a grocery store, and let me tell you, it is the MOST delicious cake I've ever eaten in my life, and that's including the 16 different kinds of wedding cakes we tried at Das Mayer when I was planning my first wedding.

    I also had a great experience with Amy's Unique Cakes...my wedding was July 11, 2009 and I was blown away by how beautiful our cake was. Amy did such an amazing job, her prices were the best I found and the cake was delicious. Good luck!
