Do you mind telling me how you are making your chair covers?  I have been looking everywhere

  • Not at all!  I'm using Muslin, it's a quilting fabric and was the least expensive I could find that would work (think i got it for $1 a yard, for my chairs, it takes ~4ft per chair but the muslin was wide enough to get 2 from 1.3 yds).  I made a template from a sheet of cardboard that I cut to the exact size I needed (I put packaging tape over the edges so it was smooth for cutting along).  As you see in the pic they just fold over the back so it's one long rectangle folded over 8 inches and tied.  I folded in all the edges and sealed with Stitch witchery (started out sewing them but measuring, pinning, then running through the machine was time consuming).  The stitch witchery I bought is 5/8 inch which allows me to eyeball the fold just slightly bigger (I wanted a 3/4 in hem) than the witchery.  I don't mind that they aren't perfect, but if you want a perfect edge, you could create another small template that is the hem size you want then fold to that measurement.  Muslin is a good fabric for this because once you fold it and press over, it holds the fold pretty well while you prepare the damp towel for pressing.  So once you've got the SW in place, the instructions for mine were to cover with a damp cloth and then press with an iron for 10 seconds.  My original design was to fold the top over then sew the sides, but once I started doing the SW, I was eying it as I said so the sides were too varied to sew.  Which in the style of my wedding (garden-y, classy casual) I like that they aren't perfect, plus now I have a pretty bow ;).The bow will be ribbon sewn on the front at the end then tied securely around the back.  I sat down and wiggled around and it will hold :).  I haven't decided what color the ribbon will be yet. This is kinda rambly but let me know if you have more questions, I'm happy to help if I can.  And here's something similar, I saw this after I figured out how to make mine.  I think these would work too but I don't think that much fabric is necessary.http://tinyurl.com/62y6bp
  • I laughed when I saw this question. I was so excited to see that you made chair covers.
  • Thank you so much :-)

  • no problem.  I totally panicked last week when I thought the ribbon around the front wouldn't work since the chair backs I saw online were much more curved than mine.  But once i tried them out, they are fine!  I think something about the muslin also helps, it's not smooth like satin would be so there is some friction to hold it on too.  YAY.
