NWR- Rent Issue

I have lived in my townhouse for 3 years and each year the rent has gone up about $100. This really pizzed me off last year, but it wasn't worth moving so we sucked it up and kept paying.A few months ago we saw units in our development being advertised for $200 less a month than we are paying plus $0 deposit. We called the leasing office and the guy said that we are locked into our lease, but that when it's up to call him and he'll work with us.So now our new lease comes and it's been raised another $50 a month. DH called the management office and no one returned his call. He then called the office in our complex and she said she was "not permitted to give out the new managers phone number" and that we must submit our request for a conversation in writing.DH e-mails the woman the request and 4 days go bye. He submits another request.We finally get an e-mailed response today from the woman (not the manager who we wanted to speak with) saying that "The best we can do is raise your rent only 1.5% instead of 3%"GO TO HELL~!I wrote back thank you very much. Please let me know the steps I need to take to officially terminate our lease. Please also put us on the waiting list for another townhouse in the complex (there are many vacant ones) at the current market rate. If we have not found something else by that time we will consider renting a new townhouse at the new rate.I'm just so frustrated right now. I have no plans to move into another unit in this complex. I'm just trying to show them how ridiculous they are being. If we move they have to repaint, clean etc and then risk the house being vacant until they find new renters.I feel like on principle I don't want to give them any more of my money. I also don't feel like moving. Ugh...

you worded your response back perfectly. what a bunch of inconsiderate lowlifes to not respect their current paying renters and yet give breaks to the unknown. i hope they come back with something more to offer. 3 years should get you something.

I hate that stuff. We just moved out of our apt because they were raising our rent but new apts were like $250 less in rent and no deposit. Where do these people get off??? You'd think they'd want to keep the residents they have rather than risk having the vacancy, makes no sense!

same thing happen to us a few years ago, although we did move into a new unit but only because it was alot nicer, newer and cheaper!!!

I get that it's a business and you're not going to get the same personal attention that I would if I lived in a two unit house, but this is just ridiculous.Two summers ago my deck was rotting off of my house and it took them 4 months to fix it! DH literally stepped through one of the steps on the deck. They came over with yellow tape and said we weren't allowed on the deck till it was fixed. It took 4 months because they needed a special company to come in and do the work. Mind you, half of the houses in the development were also taped up.I'm going to argue with them a bit more, but I really just don't want to give them any more of my money. It's one thing after the next with this place.

My landlord just sold the current house we were living in and told us we had 60 days to get out. The house next to me opened up for rent so we gave her two weeks notice and now she is being a real stickler and trying to keep our deposit, I think she's just pissed we didn't give her more notice, but I wasn't going to wait until the 60th day to get out. Sometimes landlords can be a real pain.I hope it all works out for you.

I think your response was great and shows them how stupid they're being. Even at 1.5%, you'd be paying $2700 more a year than someone else for the exact same thing! It'll cost you less than that to move, so I'd do it. Moving isn't fun (I've done it enough times!) but neither is giving $$ away.

In three years we have never been a day late on a single payment. We are model tenants who cause no problems. Now they can find someone who can't really afford the place to move in because it's zero deposit.

The same thing happened to us. Many of my friends have negotiated their rents down 10-15%-- in some cases in the middle of their lease term. When our lease got renewed we wanted to move anyway, found out that a much bigger apartment in our building just got rented for only 4% more than what we're paying. And in the last year (since after we renewed) they've started building the Second Avenue subway DIRECTLY outside my building which means that traffic is terrible, sidewalks are closed (picture this right outside your building: www.flickr.com/photos/oliversarmy/2526108763/), there's terrible drilling noise... and judging from what's going on in the 90s, it is only going to get much much worse over the next year.Our landlord refused to lower our rent even though we told them we wouldn't renew unless they would. So as annoying it is, we're moving. They'll have to gut renovate our apartment probably, let the apartment be empty for at least a month (they aren't even putting it up for rent until after we move), pay a broker, and have someone move in at a lower rent instead of keeping people who paid rent on time and complained about nothing for 5 years.But on the bright side, I'm excited about moving to a nice apartment in a better neighborhood? F YOU UPPER EAST SIDE!

i find it amazing how in a shiity economy these companies think they can charge people more money, when everywhere else people are loosing money!
