erin - mexican food?

Hey Erin, I have a question for you.  I want to have Mexican food at our mehendi party/rehearsal dinner (no Mexican blood but growing up in AZ means Mexico is the best representation of "my culture" we could get! :) ).  Are you incorporating Mexican food/decor into anything other than the colors?PS From the beginning I have totally seen a Mexican-Indian connection.  FI kept telling me I was crazy but come on ... once I made chappatis I explained, um sweetie, this is how you make tortillas!  And cilantro in Everything??

This is only tangentially related, but a friend of mine who is Mexican-American said that's how her father convinced them to eat Indian food for the first time when they were little.  He said, we have tortillas, they have tortillas.  We have chilis, they have chilis.  We use cilantro, they use cilantro... I always thought that was an amusing story.  But after she pointed it out, I definitely agreed.

Haha - I LOVE Mexican food and keep trying to get FI's parents to eat it by using the same line.

Katie-I know the indians here in TX love Mexican food. It is always indian or mexican food when they have to choose.

::butting in::  Indians LOVE mexican food (me included!!).  Not only are there are ton of similarities like you mentioned, but I think Indians love it so much because it's also so vegetarian friendly.  My mom is vegetarian so we grew up with a lot of mexican and italian food when my mom didn't feel like cooking indian.

We are from California and the only place that all of can agree on is this Mexican food place in our hometown for gatherings of Indians and Sri Lankans. I am also getting mexican food for the mehendi since it is significantly cheaper and everyone loves it. Yeah my mom loves fajitas because of the chilis and all the onions!

LOL that's awesome about the Indian-Mexican similarities. I never even noticed it before, but now that you've pointed it out, I totally agree!

I agree.. Indian people love their mexican food including myself :). Although, I don't think I have ever been to any indian events where they served mexican food.. I might borrow/steal your idea Katie, to have mexican food for the mehndi night.

Katie - I really want to come to your festivities now.  All my favorite foods rolled into one ... the only thing that would make it better would be adding in some Carolina-style BBQ ...

My ILs love Mexican food, too!!  For them, it's because of the spice.  Everything else is "bland," haha.  They actually suggested that our rehearsal dinner be at a Mexican restaurant, but NYC isn't known for its Mexican food, so we went for Italian instead (probably their second-favorite non-Indian cuisine).

haha, you girls are the best! We are actually having both Mexican and Indian food at the wedding!  My dad's family is Mexican and yes, there are a ton of similarites between the food.   I joke with my FI that between our families we'll never run out of rice.  We could be bbqing and still have rice with our hot dogs!  I think of all the foods for Indians to try - Mexican would be the best!  We're also having a pinata for the kids and serving agua frescas at the wedding... I wonder how the Indians will like that??

Dublin - oh, god yes, the north DOES NOT have good mexican food in my experience!  Oh, and I'm also part Italian so we had Italian food and one of my showers and the Indians really seemed to like it. We're doing bbq at the henna party.

omg a pinata is Such a good idea!!!  FI got one for my bday last year because we always had them when we were kids.  It was even better than usual since only I got to hit it & I didn't have to share ;)  I love the idea of adding it to the wedding!  maybe I'll have to find a way to incorporate it into the mehendi party!

I would totally try to incorporate that in the henna party!  I have a ton of neices and nephews and with all the kids there will be about 20 little ones running around at the wedding.  We always have pinatas at all the bdays, so I had one custom made for the wedding (pib) because I thought it would be fun.  I'm really excited about it even if everyone does seem to think it's a bit odd!
