NWR - Gender Reveal Parties

Just curious as to everyone's thoughts on these. I always thought they were cute, but THIS article on the NYT kind of took me by surprise!
My bff had one and I didn't think it was pretentious or over the top at all, just a BBQ get-together that happened to have surprise cupcakes at the end.
Thoughts?

I think they are fun and a way to get together with loved ones to celebrate the new family. I too don't think they are pretentious at all! I went to one a few months ago and it was a blast (especially since the parents had issues TTC). Also, the men get to be involved (usually not the case with the shower). Maybe it is a regional thing (a lot like debuts, cinco de mayo, and bridal portraits).

I used to think it was a little much but the more I see them/attend them the more I like the idea. It's a way of being surprised and including everyone in the experience.

I saw a photo (on pinterest of course) where the parents opened a box and gender colored balloons flew out! So precious!

I've seen the cake balls done where all the cakeballs are normal but only one has either blue or pink. So everyone gets excited over who is going to bite into the 'reveal' cake ball.

I would probably do ones where it is just a "FB reveal" and just have pics of balloons or something (or something artsy). But that's just me. I love the photo/video stuff.. go figure

I think it's silly to spend at much as a grand on a cake for it like the article mentioned some had done, but I think it's all up to you and your family. If you have a bunch of close friends and family that would want to be there for that kind of thing, then I think the way you did it was perfect. Since when were BBQs pretentious? Again, I don't think these need to be excessive, but what's the harm in having a get together with friends that includes a fun surprised? It's your life, it doesn't matter if some pretentious NY times writer calls it pretentious.

Really? These are the only ones I have attended. They cut into the cake and find out if it is a girl or boy. The homemade option is pretty sweet though.

I have a friend who does baking on the side (she's actually doing our wedding cake), and she usually gets the envelope from the couple and makes the cupcakes/ cakes for our friends. We always joke that she can never be in on the surprise, but she says she loves having the power and knowledge before anyone else. She's also the only one wearing black at the party, haha.
But yeah, every one I've ever heard of it's a surprise for the parents as well.

Very interesting. There was never such a thing back in the day when I was expecting. Actually both times for me was a surprise. But how much fun would a gender reveal party be. I'm jealous.

I just like the idea of making it special versus finding out in a dark room in a clinic. I had a friend a few years back who learned the gender on their Dec 22 appointment, and opened the envelope together on Christmas morning with their 2 year old daughter. I thought that was SO cool because it wasn't a big party or anything but it was still special for them.

Attempting to explain this to my 59 year old former boss was pretty daunting. I think something of a "coming out" party is what it was interpreted as. *oy*

I think I would be more of the route of your friends Amanda, considering that the wait would kill me! I like the taunt of "I know something you don't know" more than the anxiety of waiting. Either way, it will be a looooong time until we have kids and these types of parties might no longer be relevant.

Amanda that reminds me... when I was going to a gender reveal party the next day I was hanging out with my dad and he was like, 'So what time is your, um, baby exposure party?' and I still give him a hard time about that.
