I got some really nice serving  platters from crate and barrel. They werent' expensive I find that I can always use more of them even at my mom's and she's got tons! I think frames unless they come with a picture are more work. I always forget to get a picture blown up or printed!!

We got a personalized christmas ornament with the groom on his knee proposing and it had the date we got engaed- that was by FAR our favorite and most cherished engagement gift and couldn't have cost more than $10.

My other suggestion would be a ring holder

Do you have any nice pics of htem?  Perhaps stick it in a picture frame from pottery barn (or wherever) with a nice note.  I know I would enjoy a gift like that.   Otherwise, I like the idea of hte champagne or a decent bottle of wine they can enjoy together to celebrate.

    My favorite engagement gifts were

1.) Giftcard to BBB (we were able to buy an espresso machine we'd been eyeing)
2.) Giftcard to go out to eat -- a nice little treat after we got engaged
3.) Kitchen Aid Mixer -- very expensive, but awesome!

I'd say def. a gift card

Definetely a gift card to Macy's or BBB or a restaurant I think it best.  Also, you can put it in a nice fancy card.

I also agree- gift cards to BBB - then I could get whatever I needed. This excited me lol.   Do they have a registry? Alot of times when people are having e-party they already have a registry - you could get like a couple small items from there..makes it feel like they're getting alot of gifts even  though you only spent like $30

I agree with this...although I do get what you're saying mbcdefg about $30 GC feeling less weird than a $30 check.

We got a Lenox bowl with the Love is Patient poem or whatever it is on it from my Aunt. I really think it was cute. I use it as a fruit bowl currently.  I think she got it from a Lenox outlet maybe.

I also like the idea of the Christmas Ornament. My Aunt has always given me Christmas ornaments.  She's my godmother, so she has gotten me goddaughter ones, etc. I loved that she got us this too.

Someone also gave us a nice photo album, that we could put wedding pictures in.  I think this is a practical gift too. More so than a frame. I think frames are something that an individual should pick out themselves. Depending on the persons decor style they may not like a frame you would choose.

Do the gift card or check to see if they're registered for a few things already. Or give something you enjoyed getting with a gift receipt. We got about a million frames, most of which are not our taste at all and didn't come with a gift receipt. Two years later, they're still in my parents' attic.

I like the Christmas ornaments idea... as long as they celebrate it, of course :P

Even one of those bank gift cards would be good.  They could put it towards some of the wedding planning.

I loved the very cute "Our Honeymoon' frame we received since most frames were more formal/ geared for wedding photos :)

Loved a Newlyweds-type cookbook and I think with it they gave a mixing bowl/measuring cups. Very cute and not very expensive

Most engagement gifts we got before we registered were checks or gift cards.  To be honest, the checks got deposited into FI's or my bank account and ultimately not allocated to anything special. We also got some BB&B gift cards that we used to buy new pillows and sheets we'd been needing, so I definitely think gift cards are better.

We did get a couple good bottles of wine/champagne which was nice.

Keep in mind if you pick them up something at BBB, you can use your 20% coupon.

I don'tknow what type of wedding they're having, but I just found lots of unity candles on Etsy for $20 (I'm trying to order one for me) They have the "today I marry my best friend" poem, and the name of the couple and their wedding date!! :)

I did a quick search on etsy and found some interesting things - possibly kinda 'tchotke" like, but they're at least things that you put time and thought into, without being overly expensive:

A stone engraved with their name and wedding date or engagement date:

Established sign or Always Kiss Me good night or "The Jones Family"

    Framed print/ artwork about them:

Silhouette print with their names - if one of the stock silhouettes looks like them, this could be cute:

...I kinda want that hanger myself!

I'm with you - giving a check isn't always my style. They then know exactly how much you spent, it not as personal, etc. However, I do see how it is great to receive money/a gift certificate.

Glad you liked the ideas- maybe they'll come in handy some other time!

  • At the time of my engagement I have  registered with ourwishingwell.com and create a nice gift registry with all the useful items. I got a food processor and a cute handy iron from that and those were the best gift I have received at that time.
