photographer timing

My ceremony is at 6.  I can be at the site at 5.  The reception is over at midnight.  I have 7 hours of photog time.  Should I do 5-12 or have the photog leave early and get some getting ready shots?  I'm not super into getting ready pics, but I'm not sure what kind of end of the night shots I'd miss out on.

Re: photographer timing

 • If it were me, I'd rather have the getting ready shots. A lot of people will probably leave before the end of the reception, so it doesn't seem like you would really be missing out on any great shots. Unless you were planning on a fancy send off or something.
 • no fancy send off planned so would you do 4-11?

 • Depends on when you start to get ready. I would honestly do 4-11 or 3-10. If the photog can't be there for hair/makeup make sure you give a friend a camera for those shots.
 • We could only afford our photographer for our portraits and ceremony.  It sucks that we won't have pro pics of our first dance, cake cutting, etc at the reception, but I know that there will be tons of cameras there and we'll get a lot of pics sent to us. If I had your time, I would do a 3-10.  If I had the choice, I would rather have getting ready pics then have later reception ones.  Really, after the dances, cake, and garter/bouqet toss, there really isn't anything that needs photographing.
 • I disagree with LindsayMR.  Some of the best photos from our reception are the random ones he took while dancing.  This one for example was not posed at all and it's one of my favorites.  He popped the question six months (almost to the day) later:I'd go with some pre-wedding shots so you get them out of the way.  If you have the photographer from 5 until midnight that sounds perfect.  I do wish that we had some photos of our last dance.  All the remaining guests were on the floor with us so there weren't any pictures.
 • My daughter's photographer left right after the cake was cut.  After he was gone my daughter decided she wanted a picture of her with her ladies "smoking" their cigars from the cigar roller.  My sister took the picture and it is one of my favorites from the reception.Just decide which pictures you would treasure more, getting ready or partying until the end, and then make your decision based on that.  You can always have someone take pictures at the other end.
