Plated Dinner or Buffet?

Hi Ladies,I'm noticing a lot of DW resorts are requiring that I give them my guests entree selections in advance.  I'm not to thrilled with the idea of this being that it's a DW.  How do we ask our guests to know what they'll want to eat when they're away on vacation for dinner?? But i didn't want to do a buffet? What are most you ladies doing? Just buffet and let your guests eat as much as or whatever they want the day of; or are you sending meal selections with your invitations?

Re: Plated Dinner or Buffet?

  • We are doing buffet, because it is way more relaxed and we can offer a much bigger selection. Traditionally you would include the meal selection on the RSVP card... a place to check if they are coming, and a place to check which dinner they want. I thought that a plated dinner would be waaaaay too formal for us - and we have like 10 different options for our guests this way instead of just chicken or beef. HTH!
  • For the wedding, we did a plated dinner and offered guests a choice of steak, fish or vegetarian (for the few interested) on our rsvp cards (PIB). It worked out perfectly. For the rehearsal dinner, we did a mexican buffet on the beach that had a variety of options for the guests so we didn't need to know their choices ahead of time. Hope that helps!

  • We are doing a buffet. It was cheaper, more casual, & had a large variety of food. It just worked best for the casual feel of our wedding.
  • We gave our guests a beef, fish and vegetarian option that we had to submit prior to the wedding.  (I actually just sent it in last week.)  For the rehearsal dinner, we don't have to select it until we get there.  I didn't realize we would have to choose in advance so I didn't get the response cards printed up with the selections and had to email, text and call to find out from people which was a total PITA!
  • I'm taking Lisa7's advice and doing a cocktail hour after the ceremony because it its a lot cheaper. Then we are going to the all inclusive buffet at the resort for dinner. I really wanted to do the dinner, but we are having a big AHR the week after our wedding and we can't afford 2 big receptions. I like the idea of the buffet though, because I'm a picky eater and I know a lot of other people are too.
  • The buffet at our venue was actually about the same price and we didn't want to have to deal with menu card selections (plus they charge extra for multiple choices) so we went with a salmon and filet combo, and the one or two vegetarians will get the salmon only.
  • Thanks Ladies!I'm torn between doing the two-for a good portion of the places that require my guest meal selections in advance the buffet price is still the same.  Not sure if I want everyone online getting their food.  Would rather have it served to them at dinner.I'll have to talk to FH and see what he prefers.  I just don't want people on line waiting to eat-want to get the party started as soon as possible! LOL
