Inexpensive Flowers

A client I trained recently had a daughter get married. They bought the wedding flowers at Whole Foods. They placed the order ahead of time, and picked them up the day of. They were charged the price that Whole Foods would have charged for the flowers had they been in the prewrapped flower section thing (I don't know, I've never been to Whole Foods). It was apparently significantly less expensive than going to a florist, and they didn't have to put anything together. Has anyone done that?

Re: Inexpensive Flowers

  • a lot of people have... if you wiggle over to the DIY board, there are a ton of posts on this idea (a VERY good one!)

  • We used a grocery store florist for all of our flowers.  It was the local grocery store in my hometown, not a national chain.  I met with the florist and her assistant twice, and they did all of our bouquets, bouts, and centerpieces.  Rather than pay the delivery fee, my niece picked up the flowers for us on the wedding day and took them to the venue.  They did an excellent job and we only paid about $400 for four bouquets, 8 bouts, 3 corsages, and 6 or 7 floral centerpieces.  Pics in married bio.I'd definitely say it's a great way to cut the floral costs.

  • I've never heard of Whole Foods. I'm planning to order bulk gerbera daisies from somewhere local, possibly a grocery store and assemble my own centerpieces. Mine are going to be really simple and fun. Check out my Bio, if you're interested, for my plan.
  • I really wish I'd gone this route.  The florist at our grocery store is amazing, and I just assumed they were out of our price range without ever asking.  I heard later on, after I'd booked someone else, that they were extremely reasonable.Oh well.
  • Also, (according to Martha Stewart Wedding mag) you can also get a great deal by going through a farmer. One woman got her flowers through the American Dahlia Society: 120 flowers for $200. I bet there are growers/farmers for just about every flower.
  • I'm going through a grocer's for mine and got them at a significantly lower cost.  I don't think flowers are something that a ton of money needs to be spent on.
  • We are ordering ours (the roses, at least) through costco. Saves a ton of money.
  • Just a side note, if I had needed a ton of flowers, I would have purchased them online from fiftyflowers and made the bouquets, but I only needed a few.  Check into that also.
  • I'm not entirely sure of the seasonality of the flowers I want (yellow and white dasies with English lavender and bells of Ireland in North Jersey), so a farmer's market might not work for me, but it's a great suggestion, thanks. Danieliza, your flowers look beautiful (so did everything). I kind of put the wedding planning stuff on the back burner once I got the church and reception place set, so now I'm trying to figure out what I need to get done, and ideas for places to find stuff.

I ordered from fiftyflowers.com and they were great.  You can buy in various quantities.  Only thing is you do have to put everything together at the last minute.  Luck for us, there were only a few things to do, but it did take a little more time than I planned.
