Getting in Shape

Newbie Knottie Here

Hi Everyone! I'm new here Smileand like most brides, I'm trying to get back in shape here. Unfortunately I was recently diagnosed with a mild case of arthritis in my knees. As a former runner and athlete, this is NOT good news (as I'm sure you can imagine!). I'm here to ask about any good exercises that don't put a lot of pressure on my knees would be great. I'm familiar with yoga. I do Kinesis training with my personal trainer each week, and I think I'll start a water zumba class also!  If , here are any other classes, videos, websites I should consider, let me know! Cool

  • Don't forget more simple workout that include walking, weight training, or even resistance bands.  I have a bad knee and am able to run thanks to a high-tech knee brace but without that I still am able to do many dvd workouts by simply altering the moves as needed.  instead of jumping moves, I keep the cadio up just by moving.

    Good Luck!

You could try cycling - it doesn't have the same impact on knees that running does, but it's a great workout. I don't know if arthitis would prevent cycling, but it's worth a try.
  • I likewise have arthritis in my knees and (assuming I'm not having a huge flare-up), working out on the elliptical and exercise bike are great low-impact cardio to do. I've also been strengthening my joints with weight lifting which I think helps a lot in the long run.

  • All great ideas. THANKS LADIES!!!! I think my major struggle is going to be changing the way I workout. I've been a runner for so many years, and I live for the high impact/intense workouts. Whenever I workout, I always add in the extra jump to really ramp up the cardio. If my knees are bothering me, then I'll modify, but for the most part, I'm like "give me more!!!!"
  • You can still do HIIT on the elliptical or bike (as your knees tolerate and as you're cleared by your doctor, of course) to really up the intensity.  You should absolutely be able to get in a good, sweaty, feel like dying workout on the elliptical or bike.  It's all in how you push yourself.

You could also try doing some circuit training type stuff where you mix in strength moves with short, intense cardio bursts.  That will keep your heartrate up and get you working.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • I'm meeting with my trainer this afternoon. Hoping we'll put together a good plan that keeps me interested and motivated. Thanks for all the replies! Smile
  • You should try swiming. It's one of the best exercises you can do, it is virtually no-implact, and it builds thin lean muscle - so it's idea for toning!

  • Thanks Lauren! It's been so long since I swam, but I will definitely be adding it to my workout mix soon.
