groom's cake

What is the purpose of a groom's cake? We are having s'mores instead of a cake and having a "s'mores making" instead of a cake cutting....and then also having a dessert bar.... so would it be odd if we had only a groom's cake? Would people still eat the cake, or would it be more for show? And if we do have people eat the cake, how many servings would you suggest? I dont want it to be a huge cake, and we are having around 100 guests.... Any ideas?

    it's fine if you have a small cake, but i'm not sure that it would need to be  called a "grooms cake" if there is no other cake.  it would just be a cake! cupcakes would also work.mmm i want some s'mores...

    hmmm....well we are already doing a dessert display with different pastries, and chocolate dipped strawberries, etc (P.S. the desserts at my venue is my favorite part of the meal!!!)..... but maybe it's a small cake that is with the other desserts and I just make a little card that says "Tim's Dream Car" or something like that..... Hmmm...things to ponder.....such decisions!!!

    I've just started looking into getting a grooms cake... not really to have another cake, but to get my FI something that's totally him and something he would get a kick out of... (I was thinking of getting him a Brain cake... he's a nerd) I contacted Heather and she said its generally only big enough to feed 20 people, and its $4 a serving, so $80 isn't bad to make my FI laugh and know I was thinking of him... also, I was thinking of getting it for the rehearsal dinner, that way we don't actually have two cakes at the reception.. just another idea... :)

    I thought about doing a "grooms cake" only because my H didn't like the flavors I was having in the wedding cake but decided I didn't want to spend the extra money for another cake and did a tier in a flavor he would like.In your case I am not sure I would do cake at all if you are having smores (YUM... sadly I have never had one before) and a dessert bar instead of a cake cutting.  Just thinking about one person getting a slice of cake and then another and another and oops your out of cake and another one wants cake.  Does that make sense? lol

    OMG that is PERFECT!!!! I didn't even think about the rehearsal dinner!!!!! You officially just made my day! We would probably have about 30 people at our rehearsal, but I wonder if she could make that work.... Oh you seriously just made me super happy today! YAY YAY YAY!!!!! :-D

    Ok I have no idea why that posted twice...but I totally agree on that if we did a cake it would probably need to feed everyone.... so no to cake at wedding.... yes to cake at rehearsal dinner :)

    We did the groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner.  It was a chance to have something completely for DH and I kept the design a complete surprise.  He thought it was going to be something gator related (we both graduated from there) but I had Heather make a replica of a X-box 360.  She even included a little fake post-it note on top that read "Honeymoon Packing List"  she put the x-box and crossed it out.  It was really cute.We didn't order enough cake for everyone.  It worked out fine with our dessert bar.

    I also surprised my DH with a groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner. He knew nothing about it until that night. He is a DJ so I had Heather recreate a turntable (it looked so real). It turned out perfect and he loved it. It also gave the guests dessert for that night since the dinner package we booked didn't include dessert. :o)

    I want to do a "groom's cake" too. But, I think its more so that I can have an Orlando Magic cake at my wedding, and still have my wedding cake. It would be a huge surprise for FI, though. He has no idea I am even thinking about it (even though its kinda for me to, lol)
