Rehearsal dinner?

My future MIL wants to have a rehearsal dinner but my family does not feel that it is necessary. Any suggestions?

Mother of the groom is hosting a Shabbat dinner for family only. We want something nice and special for Shabbat, and there will be at most 80 people. Saturday night, the groom and I are hosting a very casual dinner for both family, and out of town friends, etc. Just some grub from a local place we love, and some cheap beer. I think the nice Shabbat dinner will set a lovely tone for the weekend and enable our families to meet, while the casual Saturday dinner will let everyone have a good time.

this has been somewhat a bone of contention with us to. Most of the people in our wedding party are not Jewish and have never been to a Jewish wedding, so we did want a "walk through" on Friday night. We are thinking about having a casual dinner after the "walk through" and afruf that night (at a deli). Then Saturday night my mother wants to have an OOT dinner, not sure if FI's "people" are coming (but that's another issue). Then wedding Sunday afternoon/evening.

a lot of michael's family is orthodox and coming in from Israel, so we are going to friday night services at his uncle's temple, then his family is hosting a dinner at the catering hall in the shul.  it's not necessary, but it's a nice thing to do for the immediate family, bridal party, and out of towners.
