NWR: Chalk another one up to the recession...

Yay for lay offs! As of August 7th, I'll be on summer vacation! Suppose now I'll have time to put away all the wedding stuff that's still sitting in my living room.Wish me luck job-hunting... It's a jungle out there. Ack!

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that! It's crazy out there! Good luck, if you don't mind my asking, what kind of work do you do? I'd be happy to keep my eyes and ears open for you.

I'm in IT... But a very specialized kind.  I work for a broadline foods distributor and I install their ordering program.  I'm looking at it this way, I have some time to further my education now.  They want to hire me back as soon as they're able (I've never seen my boss so peeved when he was telling me that I was being laid off... He's not happy that it was me that has to go)... But I want to be more valuable if and when I come back.  They were teaching me to be a systems admin too, but if I can come back knowing how to be one, I'll be more valuable.  And it opens the door for me to do other stuff too.  So in a way, it's a positive.

Jenn- Ack... No babies for awhile.  Even if we wanted to, the immunotherapy for melanoma that DH is on right now could hurt the baby :( We have to wait until he's done in a year.  Plus I want to go to Greece before we have kids ;)

oh!! i learned recently that the state will pay for your education if you're laid off...but they don't advertise it...you have to apply within a certain amount of time after the layoff and i missed that deadline.....maybe you can qualify? i'm not sure what the program is called...but if you have trouble finding it, i'll ask FI's friend who is doing it.

Jenn- I grabbed the paperwork for it already ;) I have two weeks to do research before my actual lay-off so I've already been looking.  And I've found a few Microsoft classes that they were giving out vouchers for. As for the melanoma, it was a rare case where they couldn't find a primary (a mole or something that caused the melanoma cells).  He has cancer in his fam so they think it has something to do with that.  And it was in a weird spot... His armpit.  Not really any exposure to the sun there.

oh well that sucks. at least they caught it......and that it's in a non-noticeable spot if they have to remove stuff....glad you're getting started on it! that's the best way! i made big-b pay for my school, but i'm on my own for one last class!

Yep... Did surgery and a short round of radiation before the wedding.  They were able to get everything out :) And well, this chick digs scars ;)  I think I'm just going to take classes until September (after we go to Vegas as our late honeymoon). And then really start hunting for a job again.  I'm going to look now... But unless I find something that really piques my interest I'm not going to worry about too much now.

If you seriously want to go back to school....go apply for aid at the community college's.  They have programs that pay for ATA (same thing as an AA just can't be transfered to a BA) and certificates.  They usually pay for all tuition and a portion of your books.  Also, you can get your job search waived through unemployment and collect for longer.  I started two years ago through EDCC and got my ATA in Business Management and my Project Management Certificate.  They offer alot of transferable classes.  Now I am two classes shy of my AA.  After my FI completes his BA I will go back for mine.  Look into it it is definitely worth it.
