HELP: NFP and the Pill

I am going to have to start charting for my NFP class so that I can get married in the church, BUT I am on the pill.  Will this affect my charts? Thanks,Tyler

I'm reading a book called "taking charge of your fertility" and from what I've read it definitely will affect your charting.

ok yes i was hoping that was it...taking the class and not actually doing NFP. lol

We took the class but we didn't chart. We have decided that NFP wasn't the right thing for us. You can't chart and be on the pill because you are not ovulating and you need to be ovulating in order to chart :) HTH!

Yes - just take the class... but the class requires you to do the charting, and my charting won't be right since I am on the pill.  AND besides the obvious benefits, I take the pill for my horrible cramps, so I am not really willing to go off of it.Not sure what to do... Getting married in the catholic church should not be so difficult.  UGH!

Taking a class is not required by the Archdiocese of Miami, so just the fact that you are learning about the process is enough and should be enough for your church. They cannot refuse to marry you, because it's not a requirement. You should tell your instructor and priest that you are unsure if you have chosen this method of family planning yet, but are learning about the process so you are aware. That's what we did and I never turned in the charts. I spoke to my doctors and because of my health concerns my doctors advised me that NFP was not right for me.

NOW I AM EVEN MORE ANNOYED!!!  They told me it was required by the ArchDiocese of Miami.  My church has been giving such mixed signals with all these classes, and causing huge issues with my travel schedule since I don't work in Miami and fly every week.Sorry... now I just needed to VENT...

Well, I don't know the requirements for the church, but I have been charting for a long while due to health problems. Like Michi said, in order to NFP you need to ovulate. Being on the pill prevents you from ovulating. Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It is the NFP bio.

Well the NFP classes are not required by the Arch.. but catholic couples are required to take to go a day couple retreat and in that retreat they talk about that because when i went to it they talked about it.In my church its mandatory the retreat. With the retreat u get a certificate to get a discount when getting the married lisence.but i know that when i took the retreat they did talk about. But i think NFP isnt right for me.

The retreat, Engagement Encounter, IS required by the Archdiocese of Miami, along with the FOCCUS test. The class is not. Talk to your priest. Where are you getting married? This was a requirement of St. Patrick as well and it really bothered me to spend over $100 on yet another requirement!

I'm curious...what is NFP? I am not getting married through the Catholic Church and don't know what that is.

NFP is Natural Family Planning.... its a a method of watching your cycle and knowing when you are fertile and when you aren't. The Engagement Encounter and FOCUS classes were required, and I did the FOCUS and I have the Engagement Encounter weekend scheduled for September.  This is in addition to those two requirements.  And it is $135 for the kit and Michi I agree, I am sick of spending more money on requirements...I will figure this out on Monday I guess.

If you have already been practicing NFP, are you exempt from this (non)required class? I'd hope so. If not, that's a joke. It's been a long timeee since I've started charting....

You are required to take the class or participate in engaged encounter.  I didn't think it was a requirement to actually DO the charting.  I am Catholic too, but let's face it - if the majority of Catholics acutally practiced NFP, there would be many more huge Catholic families because not everyone has a regular cycle, and people would do it wrong!!  It's not exactly what you call a foolproof method of BC.  I would check with the church on the requirement of the actual charting.
