How Do You De-Stress?

I've been stressed out this week so I've noticed that I was starting to make poor food choices. I know that some people find that exercise helps them to de-stress, but I've been "working out" all day and it hasn't seemed to help. (By working out, I mean I spent all morning and afternoon painting - my heart was really pumping - and I just mowed the lawn.) I'm going to go take a hot shower and then curl up with a good book and a glass of wine. Hopefully that will do the trick. What other tips do you all have in case it doesn't work?

Re: How Do You De-Stress?

  • Rather than take a hot shower, I take a long, hot bath. FI knows it's been a bad week when every single night I'm in the bathtub. I like to read or do sudoku or play Brain Age while I'm in there (haven't dropped the DS yet!). Also, I like to play Sims on my PC because it's kind of like an escape from my life into someone else's.
  • I like to read a really good book, preferably fiction because it helps me escape. I also like to take a bath in the jacuzzi tub and put one of my favorite "feel good" movies on my laptop. It helps to relax the body and mind at the same time. I also LOVE to bake when I'm stressed but then I eat everything I've baked so I'm trying to stay away from that habit. I'm trying to channel all of my stress into intense workouts but if you've been painting and mowing the lawn I wouldn't recommend it, then you'll just be tired, cranky, and stressed...

When im stressed or upset or in a mood (I call it "gloopy"), I like to get a big cup of tea, lay down on the couch in the dark and channel surf. Sounds weird but it calms me down. If i dont do that I like to grab a book and go somewhere quiet to read for a bit (in bed, our back porch, etc).
  • Different things work at different times for me.  Venting to a friend, exercise, or a glass of wine help me de-stress for smaller issues.  For bigger stresses (like wedding planning!!), writing in a journal or meditation seem to help me the most.
