No. I agree that it doesn't deal with the behavioral problem at all. Tangent: Has anyone seen the proposal? There's a tiny puppy American Eskimo in that movie that might just be the cutest puppy I've ever seen in my life.

• No, never. Our dog's smile is way too handsome to alter. But in seriousness, I don't understand how it gets to that point. Dogs can and should be trained not to bite. And if after proper training you still have a biter on your hands, then it's your responsibility to shut the bad seed in the garage when strangers come over. I know that there is the occasional horrible dog, but I'm one of those terrible snobs that blames poorly behaved dogs on the owner (same with children).

• I'm with you teremity. This dog wouldn't have gotten so out of hand if it's parents had bothered to parent it and train it when it was a puppy. My pug was an evil little monster when we got her (thanks to FMIL being awful to her while puppy sitting)...it took some time, and we're still working with her a year later, but at least she's not biting everyone every time they move. She's still hyper as all get out though :)

• J&K - Yes, as long as you agree to also be a terrible snob with regards to poorly trained dogs and children, and back me up in any situation where said snobbery is questioned. I would, of course, do the same for you.Soon-to-be-Mrs. Vogt - I not only think that misbehaved animals are the result of poor puppy training, but also believe it is a flat out responsibility of owning a dog to ensure that it is trained. Our lovely 5 year old golden is about ready for a little training refresher course himself. He seems to be starting to think that listening is "optional."We're not evil dog dominators or anything. Animals need to know to listen. What if he doesn't listen to "Brinkley, come!" anymore and runs out into traffic? Oh, I couldn't handle it.

• Animals need to know to listen. This, absolutely. I don't know why people think it's fine for animals to misbehave and ignore commands. So stinking annoying.Pets aren't children, but they're a long way from random animals as well. They should be treated with the same love and concern that's given to other members of the family.

• But it has gotten to that point, so what should have been the next step for the owners? And just shutting it up when strangers come over didn't really seem like an option, seems like it was biting everyone. I'm not advocating it, just curious where other owners would go from that point.

• That's a tough situation, because all you can really do is look back on the mistakes you made when the dog was younger.Pets may not be on the same level as people, but they're still the owner's responsibility. If your child has a shoplifting habit in their teenage years, you don't take their hands off. If your toddler bites, you don't take his teeth out. You have to keep working on it and you have to keep trying. The article said the dog bites strangers - the dog shouldn't be allowed around strangers, at all, ever. Even if it's inconvenient for the owner, that's the breaks. I guess by that point, you've got a burden-dog. It's tough, but it's what happens. If you make bad choices, they eventually come back to.. er... bite you.

• I agree with jane, all the way. I remember the Dog Whisperer episode with this dog. He was doing better at the end of the day with Cesar. I bet the owners just didn't continue to follow through.

• Ugh, I HATE the dog whisperer first off. But no, I would never in a million years do this to my dog.
• I'm not a big fan of the Dog Whisperer, but I think his ideas are good. For us, it works best that Brinkley knows that two legs trump four, period. He must listen, he is not in charge, and we are the bosses of him. I find him to be generally happier than undisciplined dogs.Lookit that smile.

• Aww...lookit :) He's so cute. And when you first said Brinkley, I thought of the dog in You've Got Mail...and your Brinkley could be his brother :)

• He is named after that dog! He was a gift to my fiance (from his ex-wife). It was Brinkley or Merlin. I'm glad they went with Brinkley, he's very much a Brinkley. We want to get a Westie at some point, and I am claiming naming rights. He shall be Josh.

• I honestly don't fully believe in training dogs. Our dogs have NEVER bit or gotten upset/growled at us when we were around them and their food, they do not snip and they go to the bathroom outside- but she will never sit when I tell her too, doesn't lie down when I say too.I've never had a problem with my dogs though. My dog will stand next to me and wait for me to leash her and my previous dog let me ride on his back and tug on him to no end.
• Jane! We have a Westie!

• ndzenowski - You have good dogs. A lot of dogs ARE good. Ours is good. Some are not. Brinkley is trained because 1, when he was a puppy, only the fact that he is cute saved his life. A terror. Two, he's a dog. He doesn't know what's dangerous and what can hurt himself or someone else. Even if he's not jumping up on people every day and even if he's not making a habit of running into traffic, we need to be able to curtail him if it ever DOES happen. I'm not saying the way we do things is best for everyone. What works for your dogs is what works. But your dogs also aren't the ones having their teeth filed because they bite. I assume if your dogs were biters, or jumpers or had any other negative behaviors, you would have done something about it when they were puppies.mwhitson - that's awesome. They're so freakin adorable.

• Yeah, she's a doll! Smartest dog we've ever had, too. Extremely stubborn and strong-willed, not a lap dog at all. She's a total outdoor girl.

• 1) Brinkley is adorable. If you come home one night to find him missing, you might want to start the search at my house ;-) 2) I love Westies, but they can be absolute terrors! Friends of ours have an 8 month old westie who just shredded very expensive sheets they got from their wedding. The next day the dog shredded the mattress cover. I don't think I have it in me to own a terrier.

• Oh gosh noelle! Ours has never done that! We just give her plenty of toys, and she's fine.

• Eh, she's still a puppy really. And it was when she was left alone all day for the first time in a week. So I think she was being grumpy and vindictive for being abandoned. haha.
