bridal party size

Yesterday, I walked by a photographer shooting a groom and his 12 groomsmen. They all kind of looked the same too. It was weird. How big do you think a bridal party can be before it is absurd?

Re: bridal party size

  • Honestly anytime I see more than 5 on each side it starts to look big, but we only had 3 on each side so I might be biased.  Also all of the extras are crazy, I was  BM once for a wedding with 7 BMs, 7 GMs, 2 flower girls, 1 jr bride, 2 RBs, 2 male ushers and 2 female ushers.  MADNESS.

  • I think any more than 6 is too much, but I also think that the size of the wedding needs to be taken into consideration. If there are 300-400 guests, then 12 groomsmen (while still insane) seems to fit better than if there were 100 guests. We had 100 guests and had 5 on each side. I think that was pushing it for the amount of guests we had.

  • Twelve on just ONE side? That's not a bridal party, it's a chorus line. I think once you get to having over 10 people in the bridal party (say, 6 on each side) it starts to look pretty ridiculous. Also, you have to think of the people you're asking, also. I think I'd feel more like a prop in a party of 24 than a dear friend.
  • I think any more than 4 on each side is to much. I think it is funny when brides feel abligated to add girls because they were in their wedding...or because they are their FI sister or something.
  • I prefer smaller bridal parties myself and I think 5 or less is best and 6 is pushing it.12 is definitely way too many - assuming they had even sides that's 24 people in the wedding party plus SO's that's almost 50 people taken up on the guest list and for me that'd be 1/4 of my total guest list!

  • Ggmae makes a good point about proportion. If it looks like half the guests are standing at the front, you have a problem. But if you have 250 people and 6 people on each side, it probably would look fine. Though I have to say, 24 BMs and GMs would look crazy to me even if it was a guest list of 300...
  • Also, I guess you have to take culture into account as well. For example, my Greek neighbors would have no problem at all finding 24 people to be in their WP. Their family is very large and people would be offended if they weren't asked to be in it. The couple would probably never consider leaving out a sibling, cousin, or close friend. I think that most guests would see nothing out of the ordinary either.

  • Our bridal party was large, 7 GMs and 6 BMs.  We had about 210 guests attending the wedding.  But our bridal party members held special importance to DH and I so I wouldn't have wanted to cut anyone out.
  • I think 5 on a side, maybe 6.
  • The pictures were taken in kind of a rich area, so that's possibly related. People with more money (who are having bigger weddings) seem more inclined to have big bridal parties. I wonder if the dude has to have 12 because they wanted even sides? Hmmm

  • Maybe some of the guys were ushers?  We had 6 guys in the wedding, all dressed the same/same bouts, but 3 were GMs and 3 were ushers.  Most pictures included everyone.  That would make it a little bit better right?

  • I tend to think that more than 4 is pushing it.

  • I agree with ggmae that part of it depends on the size of the wedding. But, I have to say that unless culture is affecting the size of the wedding party, if I'm one of 6+ bridesmaids I don't really feel special. However, if the bride had something like four sisters and then I was one of two close friends included I would feel special, so I suppose, for me, it also depends on the dynamic/makeup of the wedding party. (In terms of how it looks as a guest, the program would tell me that four were sisters and two were close friends, so I wouldn't think it looked as strange.)
  • we have 4 on each side and i kind of thought that was too much. but we have a big group of close friends i guess.
  • Wow, you gals are having teeny tiny weddings I guess, then, huh?! I have 14 girls and 16 guys in my wedding party, not counting the little flowergirls and ring bearers! But then again we have a guest list of 500 at the moment. So.... I guess you are right that it depends on the porportion. <3, Felicia
  • P2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111Pretty rings though. And flower.

  • I was trying to remember the rule of thumb- I think what they say is that it's one person on each side per 50 guests.  So with 30 people, you should have 750 guests!  Get on that :-P

  • What does P2 mean? And yes, it is a litle bit "nuts" but we are pretty crazy, my man and I. First of all we both have HUMUNGO families and second of all, he is a player on a major sports team so we have lots of agents, coaches, families, etc. that we have to invite.
  • glad I don't have to get gifts for 15 bridesmaids. More power to ya!
  • HOLY COW That is a huge wedding party!  But hey, if that is how many people you have that are extremely close to you, I say GO GIRL!  LoL  I, personally, think that is nuts.  However, I do alot of nutty things too, so who the heck am I to judge anyone? :-)  Congrats on your big day!
  • Felicia- I think you have more people in your wp than I have attending mine :-P buy hey, go for it if that's your idea of the dream wedding :)
