Nervous about florist....

So I think I should try to make some apointments and talk to florists this weekend. However I have no idea what I want. I haven't really even decided my colors except I want purple and want to incorporate some orchids. Here are my questions:1. What do I need to have decided before I meet with them?2. Who would you recommend to work with someone clueless like me. I know someone a few days ago recommended getting an "event designer" instead of just a florist, but I don't know if that will be in the budget. Also, I should say I am undecided about if I am going to DIY centerpieces and just have the florist to personals or if I will have the florist do it all.

I feel your pain on the floral front! I really had no idea on much of anything except colors when I started meeting with florists. I did not even know which types of flowers I liked. I would say don't stress over any of that. Tell them about your colors and how you love orchids and show them any pictures you have saved on your computer. If they are not familiar with your venue, I would definitely show pictures so they can get the vibe of the place. You can also bring in anything you have purchased on your own thus far. I usually take in my shoes (I want my bouquet to match) and the picture frames I have for table numbers. I always felt the least prepared for this vendor, but as soon as you start talking with them, they will be able to get a feel for what you may like and will start sketching ideas and showing you pictures of their past work. I would get some pricing and ideas on CPs and then you can decide if it would be better to DIY. Good luck!

I found it really helpful to go through pictures on the knot just to get an idea of what I liked and disliked. I highly encourage you to use Google Docs -- I basically created Word docs for each part of my wedding (Flowers, Cakes, Dresses, etc) and used them to store any pictures, links, coupons, etc for planning. You can access the docs anywhere you have internet - home, work, on your phone, and it makes it easier to keep everything organized.Anyway (following my 10 sec ad for google docs) after a couple months of finding pictures of flowers and saving them into google docs, a pattern started to emerge. I went to several florists and pulled up the Flower doc on my iPhone (or print them out - in color - before you go) and they immediately saw what I was looking for. All the florists still had great suggestions that ultimately led to me making a choice as to what I wanted, but I felt like going in with a firm idea of what I wanted really helped. Some florists wanted to steer me in a certain direction and I was able to emphasize what I was looking for by referring them back to the pictures. And last -- even if you know what colors you like, or what flowers you do NOT like, bring in those pictures as well! It'll save you a lot of time!

flip through the knot for picture ideas and save anything that strikes you. Bring it with you AND the florist should also show you samples of their work. Between the photos you show and the amount you want to spend, they will create a package for you (that's how the floral meetings I had went). HTH!

I suggest looking at some stuff online to get some ideas of things you like, but I'm sure any good florist will have photos and recs. You don't HAVE to go in with a solid idea of what you want, maybe you'll see something and decide from there!Good luck. Florist hunting might just be the death of me!

I agree with all the suggestions posted so far. I think if you have some colors (or at least a color family such as pastels, metallics, etc.) and maybe a look or theme in mind (vintage, modern, tropical, asian, simple elegance, etc.) then you can go from there. Like people have mentioned, just start looking through pics and inspiration boards to see what jumps at you and you will start to see a pattern. Bring those with you to your meetings.
