Hawaii Question

Hello!  Would anyone who's been to Hawaii be kind of enough to share approximately how much you think is appropriate to bring for spending money for meals, drinks, etc.  I am trying to figure out if it is way out of our price range for our honeymoon. We would go for 7 days.  Thanks!

Re: Hawaii Question

  • It varies greatly depending on what type of food you like (chain restaurant or gourmet meals), are you drinkers or just soda/tea/water, etc, as well as the island. If you are thinking more middle of the road type of people with maybe a drink here or there I would assume dinner will cost approximately $50 -$60 for two.  Lunch you could do cheaply by getting sandwiches or something so maybe about $40 if eating at a restaurant or grabbing some food.  We had breakfast included in all of our hotel stays - try to do that as that gets very expensive.
  • We are actually staying in Kona Village on the big island and all the meals are included....it does price more than other hotels, but you don't worry then about food money. I also know that if you stay at a higher priced hotel, sometimes even breakfast there can be pricey so I guess the question is are you staying in a more budget hotel--then I think about $100 a day if you aren't doing fine dining.
  • I plan on spending approx. $100 per day on dinner alone! This includes drinks. Our hotel package on the BI come with free breakfast, so we will take full advantage of that.We have a condo on Maui, so we will buy breakfast and lunch items and cook for ourselves.
  • Okay, this one really depends on what you mean by "drinks"  Honestly, you can easily spend $100 per day by the pool on drinks alone.  Drinks run about $10-$12 per mixed drink and $5-$6 per beer.  Meals are very pricy too.  I would figure about $40-$50 for lunch, $30-$40 for breakfast, and dinner could have a very wide range to it.  Of course, if food and drinks arent a priority to you, you can always go to a grocery store and stock up and just make your own meals.
  • OMG - where are pps eating that they spend so much money on food?! The prices above are pretty typical for resort restaurants but there are WAY less expensive options (that are not fast food). There are restaurants in every price range on every island. Remember that people actually live on these islands and they do not drop $30-40 on breakfast (holy crap!), $40-$50 on lunch or $100 on dinner (again, holy crap!). Even with drinks, that's just way too much. Which island(s) are you visiting? I can give you dining suggestions so you are not spending as much as pp, that's just way too much! We go to Hawaii at least twice a year and even though we usually do one or two expensive meals ($80-$100), the majority of our meals are all under $40 (and usually around $20). Oahu has the most dining options of any island so it's the best island to visit on a budget. Something to keep in mind is that groceries are definitely more expensive in Hawaii since everything needs to be brought in from the Mainland. So if you are on a budget, it may NOT save you any money to buy stuff at the grocery store...it may be less expensive to eat out.
  • I charged everything at the hotel to the room, and charged most dinners.  You really don't need much cash, just about everyone accepts credit cards. As for total expense, lunches will be around 30-40 dollars and dinners can be as high as 100-200 at nice places, and as cheap as 25-30 at places like pizza hut, etc.  Drinks are expensive but you can also go to a liquor store and stock your room up with beer and wine.  Excursions will also be extra.
