Processional Music

Should processional music in the church be strictly instrumental? I always thought it should be, but the group we hired is planning on using a vocalist. I've never been to a Catholic ceremony with a vocalist during the processional. Any thoughts?

Re: Processional Music

  • I would check with the music director, because it might vary from parish to parish, but I have been to a wedding where the processional music was sung. I guess it also depends on what you choose.

  • Our church has a very small choir, so they only normally sing at Masses. I've been to other Catholic churches in our area with large choirs that sing at whatever church event they are asked. It's really up what you want to do and what the church has available, unless you want to bring someone in to do it.
  • We had vocals during the processional, led by our cantor/pianist. I had never really planned on it, but she had some great ideas for us, and now i can't imagine our wedding without them. It was one of the things, in my opinion, that set our wedding apart from your run-of-the-mill Catholic wedding.

  • Our cantor sang some songs during the prelude, but we picked out songs for the processional and recessional that were instrumental.  We had a full mass, so a cantor was necessary for the remaining songs during mass.
  • I've attended one Catholic wedding during which the bride chose to enter to her favorite hymn.  She walked down the aisle singing!  It was precious--such a joyous entrance for a joyous occasion.

Depends on the song you pick. I've played a variety of things. I've done instrumental classical (like canon, jesu, trumpet voluntary).

Ive done ballads, both instrumental and sung (as a soloist)

I've done an entrance hymn (ideal)-- where we invite all people to sing.

The one I've been doing most is "How Beautiful" by Twila paris. The end has a key change that works nicely for the bride--- and doesn't lose momentum because its the song.
  • What other songs have you seen sung during the processional? We have a family member that we would like to sing during the ceremony or processional...but really have no idea what options are available. The music director hasn't given many options to us. Thanks so much!
