Crappy Vendor- Need Advice

Hi Girls, I hired a makeup/hair stylist to come to my house to do my makeup for the big day. I paid a deposit back in February by paypal, and she just cancelled on me by leaving me a voicemail the day we were scheduled for a trial. This was Saturday. It's now Wednesday, and I still have received no response regarding a refund. I've sent a couple of emails inquiring about my refund, with no response. Paypal states you only have 45 days from the date of the transaction, which has obviously come and gone. I'm starting to get worried. How long should I wait until I file a report with paypal (which is basically just for the principle at this point, since I know I probably won't be getting my deposit anytime soon.) Thanks girls!

I would call and say if you dont get back to me today I am going to start to leave negative feedback on every wedding site i can find. Any reputable vendor wouldnt want that, so she should get back to you. If she doesnt, Do you know her full name? I would try getting more information on her, and if the deposit was enough - i would go through the hassle of contacting paypal and seeing if theres any exception to the rules, or maybe small claims court? But i dont know what the amounts are for court. HTH! (I want to know so badly who this is because im so scared to pick out a make up artist!)

This is unacceptable! So sorry to hear you have to go through this. I agree with previous post and demand to hear back or you will have to take further actions. They should not get away with this- it's not right. If you can please pass along their information, I, too would steer clear of their services and warn other brides.

Thanks ladies for your advice- it's much appreciated.  I can assure you that this artist is no one that has been recommended on the Knot, so don't worry about that.  But it just goes to show if you try to save a little money, it can bite you in the butt.  I'm going to call her this afternoon.  And I do know her full name, and I noticed she is a member of her city's chamber of commerce, although I don't think this matters. Thanks again!

You are indeed entitled to a fund of your deposit. Especially if the MUA/HS cancelled on you. I would be very careful about trashing or even threatening to trash the artist on any wedding related web-site. You could be held responsible for libel and be required to pay the artist any losses of business she may have experienced because of your posts. Vendors depend on the internet for their business and a court may not agree that what you posted is true. A few of years ago, a popular makeup artist sued an OC Knotty for libel and won. I would contact the artist by email AND by telephone and give her 5 days to respond to your refund request. Then, I would ask for a set time, say 14 days, for the actual refund of the deposit. If you do not receive the refund in the agreed amount of time, contact the artist and tell her you will be filing complaints with PayPal, The Better Business Bureau and the Department of Consumer Affairs. Each of these entities is designed to help the consumer settle disputes. I would also consider small claims court. But try to talk to the artist and understand why she cancelled. Give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she is ill and that is why she cncelled and has not returned your call. Maybe she only meant to cancel your trial run and reschedule for a later date. Maybe she had a family emergency and had to leave town abruptly. Maybe she needs time to save and give back the deposit. Call her and say you understand these things happen and that you want to work out your refund. Good luck!

Thanks Tiger for the heads up on the libel info.  She gave the excuse of she didn't have anyone to come out that day, blaming the economy saying everyone is cutting back or whatnot.  I guess they have had to lay off a couple of stylists?  Who knows.  All I know is I want my $ back.  Okay, so it's only $50, but still.  That's a pair of shoes!  I'm calling her tonight to see if I can get an answer out of her. Thanks!

First of all, I'd like to know personaly who this is because the whole reason i just came on the boards was to get referrals for make-up artists!  Secondly, I don't know how you paid through Pay-Pal, but if it was via Credit Card, I would also contact the CC company.  Also, being and avid "Get Everything in Writing" person, document everything you have done thus far... and copy someone you trust on it.  My Mom and I have written contracts and reports of EVERYTHING wedding related when it comes to the money we spend, and we constantly send emails to people to confirm appts, and reiterate services and then blind copy one another, just in case anything like what happened to you happens. Good luck!

Good advise, Camaliana. Get everything in writing! My MUA said she does a contract so that we all remember what was said, not to hustle anybody or to rip anyone off. Also, Holstang, $50 is $50: a pair shoes, a bottle of champagne, gas and/or lunch for a few days. You are entitled to it back. Give your ex-MUA a chance. I'm sure she will return it.

Yes, do a charge back if you used a CC and threaten to spill the goods all over the net, that is SO unprofessional of her

Very negative response, Madiandcindy.  Threatening a vendor will only cause further problems and will invite a law suit (see my post above).  A consumer should be professional, too.
